shrubber85 (2833), Wallhalben, Germany Jan 20, 2006 Bottle. Orange, plum and grass aroma. Cloudy orange brown color with small head. Flavor primarily of celery with hints of grass and orange. Grassy flavor last long after swallowing. Not nearly as sweet as some scotch ales I’ve had but the weedy taste was not to my liking. DuffMan (2719), the land of bitumen, beef & beer, Alberta, Canada Jan 15, 2006 Another excellent beer from Brasserie d’Achouffe! Deep red-brown, slightly hazy, massive tan crown leaving generous lace. Aromas of soft toffee, yeast, and leather. The palate leans toward sweetness without being cloying (in contrast to the Heineken Tarwebok I had earlier), and there is a fruity yeastiness behind the caramel malt and subtle sweet spices that make up the foundation of this beer. The alcohol is subtle and well-integrated. I’m not sure of this is because it isn’t true to the style, but I found this much more enjoyable than some of the other scotch ales I’ve had. Still, I liked the "La Chouffe" ale better. Tmoney99 (4656), Cincinnati, Ohio, USA Jan 12, 2006 Bottle. Poured a dark brown with a huge light brown head that lasted. Good spice malt aroma with a small alcohol tone. Medium body with a sticky texture. Good toasted malt flavor with a moderate spicy finish. Very good brown ale. marcus (1826), Sacramento, California, USA Jan 9, 2006 This reddish brown ale poured with a lacy tan head, eliciting a malty aroma. The flavor is spicy toasted malt with a slightly smoky finish and a heavily carbonated mouthfeel. The taste mellows as the beer warms, resulting in a very satisfying drink. beermatrix (1497), Twin Cities, Minnesota, USA Jan 9, 2006 Dried blood brownish red with a medium soft-looking foamy cap that sits briefly leaving behind a big collar and thin skim. Lacing is minimal in big blobby things.
Aroma is dry and delicately soft with a semi-yielding date, prune, dark purple grapey fruitish backlay.
Taste is short, rounded in a softly darkened fruityness of red apple, purple grape, and lesser tarting fruity sugars. A bit sharp on the buds with a big carbonation hump in the middle. Finish is light and airy with a yeasty woodish dryness with a bit of fruit pits and skins trying to grab a bit of interest.
Feel is OK, the short-lived flavors don’t help anything as it has a seemingly light/medium body with that hump of carbonation in the middle totally taking away what could be a fairly smooth ride.
Drinkability is a little less then the norm for a Belgian Dark ale. Quite plain, but seems like the effort is there and comes across well made, just not much going on with this one. willblake (2160), Belcamp, Maryland, USA Jan 6, 2006 01.06.06 750ml bottle. Darker copper-red pour, mostly clear, with a medium beige head, fairly lasting and lightly lacing. Aroma is pithy and grassy, more hoppy than I expected, also some barnyard funk, leather, and toffee. The flavor follows suit and the grass and earth notes emerge all around. Leather and wool flavors, dates, some cinnamon all vie for the finish. No note of alcohol, never gets sweet, I had no idea McChouffe would be like this. ThomasE (5179), Copenhagen, Denmark Jan 5, 2006 Murky reddish brown beer with a dense tan head. Malty dark fruit sweet aroma with chocolate notes and a faint alcohol precense. Light roasted malty flavor with some dark fruit sweetness a dry and faintly spicy finish. saxo (3511), Højbjerg, Aarhus, Denmark Dec 26, 2005 A nice Belgian Scotch ale. Dark colour, with a large fluffy off white head atop. The nose was full of dark stone fruit, spice, and intrigue, the palette was lively and brought out the spicy side of things a bit more. A bit of caramel also going on I think.
