Great carbonation also. Aroma is slightly complex with caramel, raisins and some other spicey notes. Color is a very nice dark burgendy. Flavor is a little sweet with some more spice and caramel. More complex that the aroma. Finish is smooth and creamy with a nice alcohol warming. A top quality "scottish ale"?. Deductions though for not being a corked 750. oldrtybastrd (1823), Morlautern, Germany/Great Falls, Montana, USA

Pours a nice dark reddish brown. Aromas of chocolate, with hints of nut and brown sugar. Flavor is a nice creamy chocolate with a bittersweet aftertaste. rederic (1815), montréal, Quebec, Canada
| 3.7 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 8/10 | 3/5 | 16/20 | Mar 18, 2005 Deep chestnut-brown hazy hue, with a lacy head, spicy, malted-caramel, burnt brown sugar aromas, follow through a medium-bodied palate, with some fruity notes of prunes, dates, raisins, with a dark chocolate and caramelized malt note, and a hint of porto, in a soft warming malted finish Schroppfy (1813), Ohio, USA

Good, but not great. I wanted so much to applaud this combination of styles, but this beer describes a point in the exact middle of a line connecting the two beer styles it is trying to combine. If I want an odd mixture, I would rather go with the scottish/doppelbock of Robert the Bruce. thornecb (1810), Marblehead, Massachusetts, USA

| 4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 17/20 | Oct 9, 2007 Bottle. Very dark tawny red/brown with a ½ inch red/brown foamy head. Nose-dusty, spice, black pepper, cinnamon, medium CO2, anise, brown sugar, big sharp mouthfeel with some spice but not too sticky, black cardamom, green tea, cane sugar, bready, alcohol fig, black cherry, apple skins, Dr. Pepper. I really like the perfect spiciness balanced with the sweetness. Good earthy clay flavors. This is pretty much everything I look for in a Belgian. Like most beers with this kind of gravity it sweetens as it warms. YourDarkLord (1800), Urbana, Illinois, USA
| 3.1 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 3/5 | 6/10 | 4/5 | 12/20 | Nov 14, 2005 Reddish brown body. Champagne head. Nose was fruity, malty, raisins, spices. Lively carbonation tickled the palate. Flavor was sweet and clean and crisp that ended in a nice, warm alcohol glow. lithy (1800), Knoxville, Tennessee, USA
| 3.2 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 3/5 | 6/10 | 3/5 | 14/20 | Jan 26, 2009 Best by end of 2011. Slight foamer leaves a cherry red body with three fingers of cream colored head. Settles quickly. Aroma is yeasty and slight alcohol burn. Some smoky malt, chocolate and caramel sweetness. Taste is more sweet malts, caramel and a bit of peat but still very Belgian with the yeasty spices.
