| 3.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 14/20 | Jun 12, 2003 Pours a dark copper with lots of fizzy head. Bready peat malt and Belgian yeast aroma. Flavor is faintly smokey and a little spicy, but the Belgian yeast throws off the true authenticity of a Scottish ale. Hides the alcohol well, but sort of in a style all by itself. hopscotch (5501), Vero Beach, Florida, USA
| 3.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 15/20 | Jul 26, 2003 Clear, ruby-colored ale.
Creamy, off-white head. Slightly retaining.
The nose is of smoke, alcohol and molasses.
The flavor is of caramel, toffee and alcohol.
Full-bodied with a fizzy mouthfeel. Short, dry, crisp finish! My favorite style. A very good brew! Just short of world class! Bov (5478), Bienne, Switzerland

| 3.3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 4/5 | 6/10 | 4/5 | 13/20 | Jun 28, 2003 Very huge creamy head, not stable. Beer rather dark-amber than brown. Nose of roasted & caramel malts, spices. Herb-bitter, like Jägermeister. Spices, no hops above perception treshold. Thick malt base, but not sweet. Just a bit of liquorice and wood retronasal. Full-bodied, thick maltfeel. No alcohol-burn, but the wooden mallet is lying in wait. Aftertaste is again quite spicey, without any particular spice or herb coming to the fore. All in all, quite truer to the British-Scotch ale, than to the Belgian 'Scotches', which would have more overwhelming burnt malts. But the alcohol is Belgian.
