Commercial Description:
Despite the ban on women in the Union Army, Elizabeth Newcomb fought in the Civil War. Bill, as she was known, dressed as a man and saw combat in several battles. We have named our India Pale Ale after Elizabeth because its looks are deceiving. Although light in color, it is fully hopped with a bold, bitter taste. This beer is not for the rookie ale drinkers, and certainly would have been a favorite of Elizabeth’s.

On tap at the brewpub. Filtered, dark copper color, small thick head. Nice dry hopped nose. A bit cold. Bitter, but not overwhelmingly so. Nice hop profile and solid body. Full flavor going down. A solid IPA.

Surprisingly good IPA. Strong hops. A good local brewpub beer that had a nice bitter finish.

This beer is lightly hazy and deep amber in color. It is topped by half an inch of white foam, providing good head retention and spotty lacing. A mildly hoppy aroma is no big deal. The first couple of sips left me somewhat unimpressed. Decent enough but no big deal. Then about half way through the glass, a really nice spicy hop character came out (perhaps as the beer warmed?). The hops were fresh, tangy, and spicy, with hints of citrus. Although it wasn’t an exceptionally bitter beer at 45 IBUs, the malt was mainly for balance. I suppose you could call it lightly toasted and on the dry side, but again, mainly for balance and providing a medium body. This beer is moderately carbonated, with a long clean citrus aftertaste.

On tap at the brewpub. The body was medium gold with a chunky and slightly off white head. The aroma was grapefruit with some light bread. The taste had some unbalanced grapefruit rind with almonds. There was also some burnt bread crust. This was another lifeless beer at the brewpub. This needs some more malt body.

On tap at brewpub (KC). Nice IPA, bright hoppy aroma and initial taste. Malt is present in the body, and there are more hops in the clean / dry finish.

Draught pint at the St Louis Park, MN location, October 8 2006. Darkish dirty amber with little head....faintly hoppy aroma, bit of caramel swirling amidst the citric PNW notes, orange mostly....bitter orange again on the tongue, not bad at first but a chalky/dirty somewhat stale character creeps in and the beer finishes dusty-dry and pretty dull.

Nice, I like the British style IPAs the older that I get. I enjoy this one immensely, although it was a bit lighter than I liked, has some nice bitterness, and s mooth and not overly sweet maltiness, that melds well with the bittering hops.

tap-st louis microfest. light orange with a froathy white head with some sparse lacing. big pine nose with notes of fresh-cut citrus (pineapple, lemon) and some grassy hop tones as well. flavors are very resinous with prenouced pine. body verges on being lite but not bad. overall, a decent session brewpub ipa.
