Pours a deep black with about a quarter inch of tan foam. Okay head retention and lacing. Roasted grain is prominent in the aroma, accompanied by a bit of bitter coffee. This is a nice dry stout, with roasted grains that are not overdone and likewise not lacking. A little bit of coffee and chocolate flavors are in there too. Well rounded. The beer is smooth and nicely carbonated. The body is very good for the style, not too full, and not thin or watery like some brewpub stouts I have tried.

On tap at the brewpub, this was called Thompson’s Dry Stout. The body was black with a light brown head. The aroma was chocolate with some coffee and sweet potatoes. The taste was day old coffee with some hay and a little bit of apple core in the finish. This was another bland and boring McCoy’s beer.

Tap at the brew pub (KC). Nice pour, dark black with tan head that stuck around for the full sampler. Smooth roast flavor, with a bit of sweetness in the finish. Def nitro pushed, giving it a bit of an odd body.

Draught pint at the St Louis Park, MN location, October 8 2006. A thin wisp of nitro-head lasts atop the dark chocolate body....cocoa-anise aroma, like a dry flourless chocolate cake, lightly roasty....the body is fairly dull, starting out rather full and bitter-chocolaty but quickly thinning out and turning cardboardy, very bitter and chalky with little malty or fruity leavening....difficult to finish.

Black Coloring with Small White Head. Little Aroma.. Thin Mouthfeel... Bitter Chocolate and Coffee...Bitter Dry Ending. Tasted Like an Attempt Towards a Mackeson Stout.

Sampled on draft at McCoys. Pours opaque blackened-brown with a thick, creamy tan head and remarkable lacing. Aroma is mild with coffee notes. Slightly bitter with chocolate and coffee for flavor. Medium-bodied with notro carbonation. Quite simple and drinkable.

Black color with a thin and creamy head. Weak aroma of coffee. The taste is on the light side, but has a bit of bitter chocolate. Not as full as I’d like, but a passable beer.
