Faint toffee notes in the bread-like malty aroma. Thin bodied and quenching but not especially satisfying. Some caramel notes and nutty bitterness but it pulls up short. One of the weaker ales in McEwans’ mediocre line. (Bottle) JoeMcPhee (5056), Jackson Heights, New York, USA

Wet stale breadiness, faint UK hop aroma. Metallic finish. After about five minutes in the glass, though it changes quite a bit. Ends up with a faint sweet maltiness and light woodsy hop aroma. Still, pretty bland. scraff (1955), Baltimore, Maryland, USA

Lightly buttered hops, caramel, and citrus for aroma and flavor. Light bodied, watery, medium carbonation, sweet, buttery, fruity finish. This needs some serious help.... I’ve been hugely underwhelmed by the Scotch Ale, and equally underwhelmed by the famous Brown. Chalk up another dissapointment. Pours a reddish amber with a very thin head. Aroma is stale malts, weak hops, and a caramel smell. Flavor is pretty much the same, with a mild bitterness in there. Thin and watery. Ray1975 (251), Broken Arrow, Oklahoma, USA

| 2.1 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 4/10 | 2/5 | 4/10 | 2/5 | 9/20 | Feb 7, 2005 Yeah not an IPA...I picked that up before I even looked this up. Boring, fruity like flavor, far from being IPA-like bitter. Malts run this beer, and they don’t do it so well. Cornfield (4980), Oak Forest, Illinois, USA

Called an IPA but classsified as a bitter, this actually looks and tastes like a mild Scotch ale. It’s got a big malty aroma with a watered down taste to match. There’s little signs of any hopping whatsoever. I kind of like it, but.... IPA? Not by any standards. Bitter? I really don’t think so.
