Pours dark brown ruby sort of color, forms a thin head which disperses rather quickly leaving beige foam on the inside of the glass. Sweet taste with medium bitterness and carbonation. Flavors are of sweet brown malts, caramel, cane sugar, slight sweet fruit, toffee. I’ve been drinking this for 20+ years and it’s not the same, but this fresh batch is nice, but not as intense as way back when, but tasty nonetheless. Quite a distinct aroma, molasses, grape, scotch, vanilla and alcohol. Pours with a small, creamy, off-white head that goes away completely, but leaves some decent lacing on the sides. Body is a dark amber-brown. Tastee is smooth maltiness with a hint of scotch. Very drinkable and somewhat sweet. Nearly a creamy body with some soft carbonation. Although they closed the brewery in 2005, the Newcastle folks have maintained the flavor. thill25 (218), Orlando, Florida, USA

Picked up some caramel, dates, vanilla, and alcohol in the aroma. It was somewhat sweet w/ a moderately thick mouthfeel and I was able to taste some malts, caramel, and alcohol. The alcohol was a little too forward IMHO. Very dry finish... cykyc (28), USA
| 3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 4/10 | 2/5 | 8/10 | 3/5 | 13/20 | Feb 17, 2008 I smelt a caramel / birchy aroma. The aroma was faint, though. After a pour, the beer had very little head and after 1/2 minute left barely any bubbles on top. The beer had a deep caramel hue, almost opaque through the glass. The flavor was by far its strongest point. Again, caramels and molasses hit the tongue but were gone quickly. Not too much of an aftertaste, yet not crisp, necessarily. Could fit into the daily category, but it won’t be a special occasion brew for me. johndavidj99 (123), Township, Maine, USA

Very malt-dominated aroma, with a very subtle smokiness. No real hop aroma to speak of. Chocolate, roasted malt and sweet caramel in the flavors. Just a hint of acidity and sour character towards the finish. Very warming.
