Strong, smoked malt smell. High viscosity body. Taste is of slightly sweet caramel with smoked peat malts and dark tree fruit flavors.
Tastes as good today as when I first tried it in ’ 81 when pisswater ruled the US beer market. Still one of the best brews from the UK.

| 2.1 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 4/10 | 3/5 | 3/10 | 3/5 | 8/20 | Nov 4, 2007 Blech, this made my mouth scrunch all up. I’ve been scared away from Scotch ales in general because of this. Really, blech. The taste was overpowering and cloying. Ugh. Stick to single malts, Scotland. We all have our strengths. | 4.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 9/10 | 5/5 | 19/20 | Nov 3, 2007 This beer is amazing. Beautiful dark color. Gentle carbonation .Strong flavor. Flavor is VERY sophisticated .Bitter and sweet dance. The closest thing I can think of is a delicious piece of wood with caramel drizzled on it .Good stuff. JK (2961), Richfield, Minnesota, USA
| 3.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | Nov 2, 2007 Somehow I have never had this, but it was a good surprise and far better than I expected. The aroma has full malt and an earthy aroma as well. Flavor is sweet on a heavy beer. Rich port is in there, a touch of smoke, rotting fruit. This is just what the style should be and at a good price. tytoanderso (1387), St. Louis Park, Minnesota, USA

| 3.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 14/20 | Oct 30, 2007 Nice dark pour with brown head. Very sweet roasty nose to it. Some smoke on the first taste, yet not over powering. Good bit of caramel and malt, but a nice little hoppy note to it. Medium mouthfeel with a peaty finish. Rather suprised, nice ale.
