The nose was malty, yeasty, fruity, and had a slight oakiness to it. The tast started very earthy and vinious with caramel malt, oak chips, honey and toffeee. Hop profile was light and unbalanced in the finish. Alcohol was very noticable beneth a dark blanket of sticky sweetness. You would expect more smoke and peatiness from this style, but this Scotch Ale falls a little short. I wouldn’t recomend this unless your a fan of the style. shalloWMeans (160), Independence, Kentucky, USA

Color is very dark brown, almost black, with a nice ruby afterglow. The aroma is dominated by malt; burnt and toasted. There are also prominent hints of whisky, peat, butterscotch, raisin, and strong vanilla bean. Very complex aroma. The taste is heavy and dense with peat, dark fruits, vanilla and rye. Overall this bad boy is thick and complex but also easily drinkable and quite enjoyable, with the high dose of alcohol following through with a warming finish. This beer would be great on a chilly fall night, but is a little heavy for the summertime. b33r (363), Cleveland, Ohio, USA
| 2.6 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 5/10 | 3/5 | 5/10 | 2/5 | 11/20 | Aug 25, 2007 Very dark brown in color with no head and no lacing. Aroma and flavor are very awkward and unappealing. Bland piney flavor, boring and rather disgusting. rmarquis (1), Lancaster, Pennsylvania, USA does not count | 2.3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 5/10 | 3/5 | 4/10 | 2/5 | 9/20 | Aug 23, 2007 This beer is a disgrace. Admittedly out of the bottle. Dark syrupy texture coupled with an overly sweet flavor, this scotch ale resembles a poorly brewed porter NickVega (73), Eugene, Oregon, USA

| 3.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | Aug 17, 2007 This was surprisingly good. Poured deep brown with ruby red highlights. Nice foamy head and lacing left on glass. The taste was really sweet. I’m kinda new to Scotch Ales, but it reminded of a dopplebock with the really sweet malty backbone. A touch of roasted malt and something else (hint of chocolate) presence in the end. Not much by way of hops. I think I’d have to have this a few more times to really decide if I like it...might be a tad too sweet. BigDaddyBlues (39), Columbus, Ohio, USA
| 3.4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 3/5 | 6/10 | 3/5 | 16/20 | Aug 17, 2007 Pours a dark brown in color. Sweet, caramel on the nose. There is a thick feel in the mouth. A very smooth beer, and very malty and sweet in taste. No alcohol taste despite the 8% abv. This is a regular for me as I have found friends who did not like most of the beers at my house to be to their liking but nobody has not liked McEwans.
