Pour put a deep chestnit brown aler in the glass...nice 3 finger tan cap lasts a while then reduces to a surface cap that laces the glass sides.
Aroma: Grainy, burnt treacle, light smoke, figs, wet hay ( whiff of alcohol).
Medium body, modest malt, thin mouth feel for a rich scotch bock... molassas-musty character.
Profile: up front the the cookie dough malts then a rush of dark treacle/molassas sweetness mingles with some dried fruit and smokey notes...finished wet and musty-sweet where the sweetness is slowly cut away by the attenuated hopping.
Impression: Nice...like a dark Bock but with more ale yeast fruit tastes and a pleasant musty/woodsy decernment..even though it is obvious the ABV had been brought up with sugars and not malts, and the body is a tad thin for this type of beer, the whole thing is carried off well enough forMcEwan’s to retain their older clientele who remember when this beer was malty and full bodied before the use of adjunct sugars. A dark dark pour with a slight head. It’s a deep ruby brown that plays with the light. The nose is nothing BUT malt. The flavours are brown sugar, molasses, and coffee. This is a nice one for the winter time. theisti (1674), Leawood, Kansas, USA

| 3.2 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 4/5 | 6/10 | 3/5 | 13/20 | Oct 31, 2006 dark mahogany with very little head. caramel, molasses, some spices in the nose; pretty much the same in flavor. found it kind of thin, especially for the alcohol being as apparent as it was and for how sweet it was. it’s not bad, but i don’t know if i’d have it again. cstuartj (324), Washington, USA

Very little head on it, but leaves a nice bit of lacing. Very nosey, rich earthy, dark flavors, hit of alcohol. some spice undertones. Finishes dry. IrishBoy (2716), Bakersfield, California, USA

Pours dark in my steeler stein, no discernable aroma. Initial slurp is pretty flat and bitter malty. A little viscous. Finish is alcohol and bitter, lingering...oooooo. Would pass this up in the future.
