Dark brown to black color, very small head, large bubbles, vanished rapidly. First, I’m struck by a rhum-like aroma, then it’s vanilla, loads of caramel and some oak. Flavor is quite sweet and is balanced by a nice roastiness and subtle acidity. This sample finished with a coffee bitterness. Mouthfeel could be fuller. One of the best McEwans I’ve had, will definitely cellar more of these. gpwasr10 (8), USA does not count | 3.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 15/20 | Jul 3, 2006 One of the great halves of the old “Steak & Ale” dinners. I love this Ale with a Med Rare cut of Prime Rib. Hits your tongue strong and does not let go. A bitter aftertaste but this is a Dark Scottish Ale we are talking about, not “Bud”, so you have an idea of what your in for if your buying it. Serving it at room temp revealed more toffee and chocolate hidden in that dark body. rsans (125), Pont-Rouge, Quebec, Canada

The high alcohol content makes it very difficult for me to discern aromas and flavours. In my humble opinion, nothing offensive but I thing there are much better ales out there without the strong alcohol taste.

I can see how it’s good, but frankly I find it really powerful, almost too powerful to be really enjoyed. STEPHENDR (478), California, USA
