Commercial Description:
To remind us of warm summer days and happy-go-lucky nights comes our newest bottled beer, Sunflower IPA. In the 1790s, English sailors needed an ale that could withstand the long sea voyage to the colonies in Asia. Knowing that alcohol and hops are natural preservatives, English brewers developed these strong, highly hopped ales known as India Pale Ales. McMenamins Sunflower IPA was first introduced in the summer of 1995 at our West Linn brewery. Inspired by the bountiful sunflowers grown in the pub's beer garden, our IPA has a deep golden color and distinct yet subtle citrus flavors that satisfy both the diehard IPA drinker and those who prefer a lighter palate. Sunflower IPA is truly a beer for the masses. McMenamins artists Lyle Hehn, Myrna Yoder and Jennifer Joyce were each asked to design a label for the new IPA. What resulted was three incredibly beautiful yet dissimilar ideas. Rather than choose one label, we will issue three different bottles throughout the year. Malts: Great Western 2-row, Briess 40L Crystal Hops: Chinook for bittering, with a blend of Chinook and Cascade for flavor and aroma Specifications: Original gravity: 1.062; Terminal Gravity: 1.011; Alcohol by Volume: 6.58% Calories/pint: 265

Sampled this one on draught at McMenamins Edgefield in Troutdale, OR. This beer pours to a hazy, deep golden to orange color, with a soapy, white head, and a moderate amount of carbonation. The nose on this beer is really excellent, with vibrant citrus aromas of lemon/grapefruit. The palate is firm, with good pale and biscuity malt flavor, with some tangy/candy lemon hop flavors as well. This beer finishes with good pale and biscuity malt up front, then ends with a zesty, tangy, citrus hop bite that lingers. Well done AIPA, with good hop character, yet a very drinkable beer.

At Old St. Francis School in Bend. Pours hazy orange with small white head (probably just the way it was poured). Some carbonation bubbles. A grassy, pine, resin nose with weak malt backbone. A decent bitter finish, but seems weak and watery overall to me.

A- Pours a light orange hue with a small, egg white head. S- Smell is very faint, yeasty notes, some piney hops. T- Tastes a lot like their hammerhead pale ale. Sweet syrupy floral notes flow into a piney hoppiness. M- a little thicker than the normal ipa, good carbonation. D- Easily sessionable, not the best ipa, not the worst.

A decent low abv IPA that I would skip. Tasty crisp finish with a golden pour. Lacks IPA character, however decent it is.

draft @ ringlers pub - orange with white head and slight haze throughout; standard IPA aromas of hops and fruit lead to crisp hop flavors without much malt backbone; bitter finish

On tap at Bagdad Theatre in Portland--Poured a bright hazy yellow-orange body with a medium sized white head. Nose of bright floral hops and bready gritty grains. Well-carbonated with a good mouth feel. A little dull in the finish, but overall, pretty good.
