GAManiac (1123), Atlanta, Georgia, USA Nov 8, 2009 22oz bomber courtesy of VanillaMike poured into a tulip.
Pours a hazy golden orange with a big creamy beige head that leaves very little lacing but does stick around as a cap for a while.
The aroma is weird for an IPA with a very musty, earthy presence as well as a bit of tartness. There is plenty of sweet malts and even a spicy yeast aroma in the nose. The hops are present with some citrus and grassy hops, but not that prevalent.
The taste has an even more noticeable tartness up front. It’s partly from a lemony hop presence but there’s also a distinctly Belgian yeast character that makes the finish spicy with some musty bitterness, if that makes sense. There are some fruity hops floating around on the tongue but the earthiness and tartness seems to distract from all else.
The mouthfeel is medium bodied and extremely dry and earthy in the finish. The feel is much more like a Belgian IPA than an English or American IPA.
This is an interesting beer but the big Belgian presence doesn’t seem to come together with everything else. The mustiness is really unique but no altogether pleasing. Pretty good. jimhilt (1663), Bow, New Hampshire, USA Nov 7, 2009 Pours a three finger cream head that fades slowly to a thin layer leaving some lace. Cloudy amber color. Light to medium carbonation and light-medium bodied. Piney hop nose. Flavor is hops and tart citrus. Light lingering bitter finish. Similar to their DIPA but lighter bodied. Not as hoppy as some American IPAs. $2.99 for a 22oz bottle from Beverage Warehouse Winooski, VT. Cletus (5001), Connecticut, USA Nov 1, 2009 Pours amber with a white head. Smells of wildflowers, sage, earthy. Tastes bitter and floral with some citrussy splashes on the finish. beerfest5 (128), Simsbury, Connecticut, USA Oct 2, 2009 more of an english ipa than an american. leaned more to the flowery hops than the citrusy hops. not bad but a little hard to define. LadySusan (462), Ste-Therese, Quebec, Canada Sep 13, 2009 650ml.bottle shared whit Quevillon. The color is a hazy orange and a thin beige head. The aroma is of hops and citrus fruits. The taste also of hops and citrus fruits that give a bit of a sour taste, the finish is of a bitter I.P.A..Nice and refresing. Très savoureuse, une bonne IPA fruité! williamherbert (461), Syracuse, New York, USA Aug 30, 2009 The appearance is a cloudy, murky apricot orange; pure apple cider. Big puffy head. Tiny carbonation bubbles. The head is just huge. Murky, hazy and amazing-looking.
The smell is heavy, resiny hop. A tad musty, but also a little spicy like a Belgian ale. Floral with some orange peel.
The taste is heavy, resiny hop. Some deep, dark malt, like rye bread. There is a Belgian yeast spiciness that I didn’t see coming. Funky with some hops, though not a taste I’d say I crave.
The feel is milky but with a fizzy bite. Like a thick Belgian ale.A sipper. Could use a bit more "liquidity." Overall, it’s funky like a Belgian ale, moreso really than it is an IPA. Good, but misleading. Doesn’t quite live up to its appearance. jcwattsrugger (5223), Florida and, New Jersey, USA Aug 11, 2009 22oz bottle-pours a dissipating light tan head and copper color. Aroma is medium malt-caramel, orange. Taste is orange/some pine hops, medium malt-caramel, towards medium body. Easy, malty, towards a PA.
