sfontain (500), Columbus, Ohio, USA May 17, 2004 Bomber. Pours totally opaque with a quite dark, brown head that eventually disappears, never to be seen again. Aroma is quite strong with lots of roastiness and chocolate and coffee; perhaps also some light raisins and caramel. Flavor is very sweet, a bit acidic and just barely a touch sour; a little vanilla, along with loads of coffee and chocolate, and a significant hop hit in the finish. Not completely unlike the imperial stout, although I think the impy is a bit more mind-blowing than this. Thicker-than-average mouthfeel but could be thicker; taste lasts in the mouth a good while. Very good.
DrDavid (117), , Vermont, USA Aug 4, 2008 (Bottle). Sweet clean aroma. Pours deepest brown, with a tan moderate size head. Flavor is sweet chocolate and malted toffee, with a tangy after-bite. Full finish. Nice stuff. kramer (1864), sunbury, Pennsylvania, USA Apr 13, 2008 22 oz bottle, via BA BeerTruth. Pours a flat black body under a rather large fizzy brown head that settled to a craggy mass of meringue. The nose is roasted malt with an earthy oatmeal undertone. Some light hops and a bitter chocolate scent round it out. The flavor is sweet chocolate and roasty malt with a slight sour mash pervasiveness that makes it a little acrid. Finishes with moderate bitterness and a lactic twang. Mouthfeel is medium bodied with a little too much fizzy foamy carbonation. Fairly disappointing overall, a little too much of that "house" character if that’s what you want to call it that McNeils is infamous for. goldtwins (3721), Nesconset, New York, USA Apr 7, 2008 Tap @ Blind Tiger. Poured black with a tan head. Sweet roasted malt aroma with mild-moderate amounts of chocolate. The flavor was semi-sweet and full of roasted malt. Semi-dry finish. Nice smooth mouth feel. puzzl (1715), New York, New York, USA Mar 27, 2008 Tap at Blind Tiger. Oaty, stale aroma, a bit sweaty. Stale coffee in the flavor, but nice and clean and drinkable. Lightly sweet. Not distinct but a pretty good stout. I find it funny that this is listed as a Sweet Stout and the Alchemist Coffee Stout is listed as a Dry Stout, consdering how similar these two are. rudolf (1547), Buffalo, New York, USA Mar 27, 2008 Draft @ blind tiger. Black but in direct sunlight appears a milky deep brown. Tan head. Nose is lots of cocoa, some burnt malt, slightly lactic. Flavor is bitter cocoa, hoppy with some slight burnt malt & chocolate, light fruit. Finish is almost minty with hops, cocoa & toffee.
