Poured a dark black with red edges and a very small sized off white head. Aromas of oatmeal, chocolate and roasted malts. For a lack of description, it pretty much had an overall sweet smell to it. Tastes of oatmeal, roast, light coffee and anise. Thinner body. jcwattsrugger (5573), Florida and, New Jersey, USA

| 3.4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 6/10 | 4/5 | 12/20 | Apr 18, 2004 Updated: Mar 29, 2005I’d give it 3.6 on tap at mcneills. mellow oatmeal, banana like fruitiness, mild acid touch with a lot of bitterness Bottle: Pitch black with a thin dark brown head. Heavy aroma, intense hop profile, grapefruity and flowery, very green, but good chocolate chunks in there too and you really feel the oatmeal just by smelling. Palate is right to the point, do not pass go and do not claim 200$, this is lemony(grapefruit juice even) with lots of alpha-acid, citric, tart, agressive. Roastiness is also very direct. This is an intense rendition where the focus is hard to be kept to find some depth, but there are some plums or prunes in the malt background as well as some coffee grains. A smaller version of their imperial stout which seems a bit redundant. Nice full and velvety body with low carbonation, but that alone doesn’t do the trick for me. | 3.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 5/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 15/20 | Aug 21, 2003 Appealing rich thick black with a good dense brown head. Caramel, toffee, roasted coffee bean aroma. Smooth flavorful body, good subtle sweetness and nice drinkablility. My only complaint is that it's a little thinner than it appears. | 3.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 5/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 15/20 | May 30, 2009 22 oz bottle. I bought this because at 3 bucks it was a steal. I’ve had a lot of problems with McNeills stuff in the past, but this beer gives me some confidence that they’re getting it sorted out. Dark black beer with a thick sticky deep tan head. Lovely aroma of coffee/espresso and a bit of cocoa. A soft tartness and a light roastiness as well. Perhaps a touch of berries, but it is mostly firm dark malts, milk chocolate, and a bit of roast. Sweet and fairly full-bodied with a light silkiness on the palate. Pretty nice brew really. DocLock (4648), Lower Pottsgrove, Pennsylvania, USA
| 5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 10/10 | 5/5 | 10/10 | 5/5 | 20/20 | Dec 23, 2006 Wow, just wow. The pour is ebony with 1-finger brown head. The beer looks oily and almost shiny like a crow. The aroma is awesome, big roasty malt, big chocoff, some licorice, hazelnut, and anise. Dense palate, very creamy and smooth, with tons of flavors including chocoff, roasty dark malt, hazelnut, and slight anise. This one is outstanding, and well worth a 5.0 score.
