mcox90 (617), Wilton, USA Sep 12, 2009 22 oz bottle. Pours a dark brown, almost black, with a thick creamy brown head and lace. Aroma is bitter chocolate and burnt ashes. Maybe some coffee grounds too. Nice thick, heavy palate. Flavor is burnt chocolate chip cookie, bakers chocolate, coffe, and licorice. Overall, very nice. williamherbert (461), Syracuse, New York, USA Aug 30, 2009 The appearance is a dark, opaque chocolate brown. Big cratered cardboard brown head. Big thick lace. Reddish tinge.
The smell is dark black licorice. Heavy caramel. Really sweet and intense. The licorice aroma is overwhelming.
The malt comes in like burnt cookies. Heavy alcohol sting. Really bitter and burnt, opposite of the aroma. Harsh but also equally delicious. Supremely bitter.
The feel is oily and thick. Remains on the tongue for a bit. This is a strong, bitter, burnt drink. Delicious but too intense for repeats. Très bon, agréable à boire, je ne peux pas penser à d’autre qualités nécessaire! guzzler67 (1272), Hanover, Maryland, USA Aug 2, 2009 Very dark brown appearance with a medium size beige head and good lacing. Roasted malt aroma of coffee and bitter chocolate. Dry, earthy, woodsy taste, moderately hopped, with flavors of ground coffee beans, molassas and dark bread; chocolate more evident in the aftertaste. Medium bodied, decently carbonated mouthfeel with a lingering finish. puboflyons (589), New Hampshire, USA Jul 7, 2009 From the 1 pt. 6 fl. oz. bottle with no expiration date or lot code. I am glad that McNeill’s has started making their brews more widely available in New Hampshire. The pour is very dark brown to almost black with a tan frothy head. Hops are clearly in the aroma along with chocolate malts. The mouthfeel is medium to heavy and the flavor is quite hopped up with a strong chaser of dark malts. Bien!! smcolw (314), Wayland, Massachusetts, USA Jun 20, 2009 Excessive and chunky beige head. Lots of lumpy lace. The liquid is dark brown, but light shines through.
Sweet chocolate smell; light latte aroma.
Relatively thin body for the style. Cocoa flavor with a bitter bite at the swallow. The aftertaste has a sour element to it. Fresh cherry notes with a touch of Coca-Cola. dnstone (135), , New Jersey, USA May 28, 2009 Pours with a rediculous head! Not a bad porter. Wish I could have tried more of their beers, but the brew pub was closed...I found this bottle at the Cabot annex :) jcwattsrugger (5223), Florida and, New Jersey, USA May 21, 2009 on tap-pours a light brown head and mahogany color.
