| 3.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 17/20 | Apr 12, 2004 Great nose even as soon as the bottle cap is popped. Speaks to the generous usage of hops in this porter. Little head, quickly disappears to a ring around glass. Chocolate, carmel, and burnt aromas are immediately noticeable when poured. Flavor is initially bitter, with some chocolate and finishes bitter and slightly sweet. Medium body and a more watery texture than the average porter. All in all and very good porter, if slightly unusual. | 3.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 17/20 | Dec 28, 2003 Bottle: Great nose, chocolate and piney, more an ipa nose, bigger than most porters. Reddish brown color. Clean, sediment stayed in bottom of bottle. Little head, quickly disapppeared to just a ring. Burnt and bitter flavor, chocolate, carmel. and grapefruit all come to mind. Thin, kinda chalky, with some linguring bitterness. Very drinkable. Man, what a great beer. Definately out of style, but a great beer none the less. freekyp (905), Thomasville, North Carolina, USA

A bit of milk chocolate in nose and flavor plus loads of black coffee which lingers into the aftertaste. Creamy mouthfeel and excellent lacing complete this striking brew. | 3.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 14/20 | Nov 5, 2003 (1 pint 6 oz bottle) There is this guy in Montreal named MartinT who sends me an email saying that he's off to Vermont and asks me to list my 5 most desired McNeills - then brings back 3 of them. What a superb Ratebeerian! Pours a medium, beige, foamy head and a opaque body with phantom white chucks linguring in the shadows? Hoppiest nose of any Porter I have had... on scent alone I would have thought it to be an IPA. Initial tinny palate that wanders into the coal then roasted malt realms. As mentioned below - it really is kind of thin?. Lasting bitter finish. Very good beer but needs more complexity and body. Thanks MartinT!!! loweredsixth (942), Fresno, California, USA

The aroma was bitter and metallic with a well-roasted character. The flavor was hoppy bitter with a strong metallic aftertaste. Medium thin feel...well carbonated. I really didn't dig this porter...too much of a metallic character. dirtymike (2018), Manchester, New Hampshire, USA
