Backus’s Backdoor Bash ‘08...Pours pitch black and stays that way with a fat-bubbled, beige head that doesn’t last. Big-time toasted nut aroma... that’s what really stands out to me. Medium to full-bodied with soft carbonation. Coffee grounds, unsweetened cocoa and a touch of tangy cardboard oxidation. Bone-dry finish. (4+) Dry dusty roast malt, coffee like roast. Light burnt wood notes. (6+) Dry bitter roast malt returns in the flavour. Wow - VERY bitter roast. Coffee grounds. (6+) Average palate is quite carbonated. This a decent stout, but the dryness is not to my liking. Bottle shared by HogTownHarry HogTownHarry (4020), Toronto (Harbourfront), Ontario, Canada
| 3.4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 6/10 | 3/5 | 13/20 | Oct 22, 2008 Bottle (22oz). Shared with blankboy, garthicus, jerc and mabel - bottle via trade with glouglouburp. Deep, near opaque ruby-black pour, large lasting light brown frothy head. Dry, deep roast cocoa / coffee bean aroma, quite herbal-bitter - simple, nice. Taste is even drier, almost a tad sour - the malt is lighter, although it leaves a solid acidic coffee aftertaste ... perhaps a tad light, overcarbonated, and a little sour in the aftertaste. daknole (2960), Plantation, Florida, USA
| 3.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 3/5 | 16/20 | Sep 9, 2008 Bottle from my Vermont trip. Black pour with a brown head. Aroma is bittersweet chocolate and coffee. Flavor is the same with a dry and roasty finish. I usually dont like "dry" type stouts, but this one is damn good. Wow. DrDavid (957), Johnson, Vermont, USA
| 3.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 15/20 | Aug 31, 2008 (Bottle). Bitter chocolate and cream aroma. Color is darkest brown with a huge light brown head. Roasty chocolate malt flavor, notes of coffee and hops. Very long finish that provides a light bitterness that goes on and on. Excellent. | 2.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 3/5 | 5/10 | 3/5 | 12/20 | Aug 10, 2008 In short: A simplistic highly roasted stout without much complexity. Boringly roasted.
How: Bottle 22oz, drank the day of purchase (therefore most likely very fresh)
The look: Black body topped by a short-lived beige head
In long: Nose is roasted. Taste is roasted too and honestly there’s just not much more than roastiness about this beer. As usual with highly roasted stouts you get the feeling of maybe black chocolate and/or coffee but in this case its mainly pure roastiness that resembles burnt wood. Effective hops but roastiness remains the dominant flavour all the way through including the finish and after-taste. Any more roasted and you’d need a Dustbuster ™ to clean up if you spill some. craftycarl21 (560), South Hero, Vermont, USA
| 3.7 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 14/20 | Jul 20, 2008 excellent pour- pitch black with a four finger dark brown head and intense carbonation building from the bottom. aroma of dark malt, plum, raisin, coffee, cream, and some chocolate- really delicious, not as bitter as some stouts. Flavor is very good- roasted malt, coffee, bitter chocolate, and a piney woodiness are clearly evident. Palate is nice, but nothing special for a stout in that department. Overall a very nice beer, may bring me back to trying more mcneill’s after being disappointed by their pullman’s porter. Ty5592 (1015), Lansdale, Pennsylvania, USA

Light coffee and dark chocolate notes begin to show up as the beer warms. The taste is deep roasted malt with light coffee and choclate. Very dry finish. Not bad. Much better as it warms up.
