Commercial Description:
Black Eye Ale is a unique blend of two of our popular brands - Black Hawk Stout & Eye of the Hawk Select Ale. Black Eye Ale is big in flavor and smooth in finish. 22 oz bomber to celebrate new employment. Served in a Samuel Smith pint glass. Pours very dark clear brown with a small tan head that doesn’t last long. Aroma of roasted malt and molasses. Flavor of very roasty malts, black coffee and hop bitternes. Dry but smooth. Only the faintest hint of chocolate. Bold stout flavor smoothed out and made rich with the Eye of the Hawk Ale. Mouthfeel was full and round. I have had Eye of the Hawk, and liked it, but never the Black Hawk Stout. I will surely look for it to try on its own in the future. I’m in agreement with JoeMcPhee on this one, it’s the best black & tan I’ve had. Even my wife liked it. $2.99 at Broudy’s, Jacksonville FL.

22oz bottle. Poured a dark and see through brown color with an averaged sized off white head. Weak aromas of roast, nuts, and coffee. Tastes of chocolate, roast, coffee, and citrus. Body a tad on the thin side.

It’s been a while since I had this - just found the rating... Black Eye ale pours opaque ruby with a large fizzy light brown head that is quickly gone. There are strong malty aromas here, led by burnt grains and coffee. The hop aroma is light citrus/grapefruit. Possible notes of toffee and tobacco. Upon tasting, this medium-bodied offering has lively carbonation and a vinegary astringency. I didn’t think it was smooth in the finish as the description suggests. The flavor was a little odd at first, but I took to it by mid-bottle.

From a 22oz. brown bomber bottle with a short blurb on the neck label, no bottled/freshness date. Made a decent appearance, poured an opaque softly ruby hued dark chocolate brown with a foamy pale tannish bubbly head, medium carbonation overall. Had a roasty malty nose, chocolate and sweet fruity, with whiffs of lemon zest at the edges. A crisp, smooth medium bodied mouth feel, above average drinkability. Roasted malty taste, chocolate and fruity, spicy grassy and lemony hoppiness in the middle, rolling in it’s bitterness, a tea-like taste towards the end and a dry, roasted malty and lemony, grassy hop finish. You can easily tell that Mendocino blended their stout and red ale together for a decent and drinkable black & tan.

this is a pretty good tasting brew. Its appearance is very dark with an off white almost brown head. Taste is complex rich, malty, and finsihes slightly bitter but still smooth. But is this an ale? Why not a porter?

A great combination of Black Hawk and Eye of the Hawk. The two work well together, giving the beer a very smooth finish. This blend competes with another other Black and Tan on the market.

22 oz bomber. Dark brown beer with a thick tan coloured ehad. Great toasted malt aroma, toffee, coffee and some medium crystal sweetness. A hint of molasses. Flavour is pretty solid, dark chocolate, some nice lingering roast. A bit of sweetness in the middle. Coffeeish and fairly bitter, with a touch of herbal hoppy flavour. A hint of prune fruitiness. Long lingering roastiness. Lots of flavour, full-bodied and very drinkable. The best black and tan I’ve had.

(bottle - 22 oz) Dark ruby color with red highlights and a thin and creamy tan head. Very faint and light aroma. What I can find in it is roasty and malty with some chocolate as well. Smooth and roasty taste with a nice and smooth chocolate and malt middle. The end is very smooth and malty with a slight hint of apple skins and alcohol. Very warming and very creamy. I wonder what’s the percentage of each of the two beers in there. Mostly I taste the stout. Not much of the Select Ale. I would probably classify this one as a stout or a porter.
