Commercial Description:
Black Hawk Stout retains the big traditional flavors of an Irish-style stout and yet offers a refreshing dry crispness that is rare in many dark beers. "Bottle Conditioned" Black Hawk Stout is replete with a rich, roasted malt flavor that makes this not-so-heavy stout, creamy and ever so smooth. It has a subtlety that surprises and converts even the most reticent stout drinker.

Bottle: From the beer of the month club. Pours dark with a good head. Aroma and taste of a smoked beer. Really not very good for a stout.

Bottle: dark brown pour, very small tanish brown head, quickly dissapates. Smells of medium roasted malt and coffe. Not much on the palate. A decent coffe flavor but acidic after taste.

Acrid burnt phenol nose with notes of over roasted coffee and black strap molasses. Astringent and burnt palate with some mild graininess. Astringent lingering finish.

The final offering from my winter mixer, decent but not great. Burnt malty aroma along with a mild roasted coffee scent. Medium dark brown pour, looks thin with a 1/2" tan head and mild lacing. Medium bodied stout, thin compared to the good ones. Nice roasted bitter aftertaste. Calm and relatively smooth. A fair amount of roasted dark malt coupled with bitter coffee. It’s flavorful enough to be decent, but not worth revisiting. A thin and mild stout, but it’s still a stout.

Very roasty. A thin body though, with the aftertaste not as present as I would have hoped, but a very clean beer indeed. Perhaps an intro stout, I guess. Definitely not a bad beer, though I like a bit more flavor.

Dark brown color with a thin head. Aroma of salted pork. Sweet barley taste coupled with just a little roasted malt. It finishes very clean.

Bottle: Dark brown pour with a small tan head. Nose is coffee, cocoa, and light roast. Taste is fairly light with roast and coffee, a little chalky. Very mild stout.
