Commercial Description:
Black Hawk Stout retains the big traditional flavors of an Irish-style stout and yet offers a refreshing dry crispness that is rare in many dark beers. "Bottle Conditioned" Black Hawk Stout is replete with a rich, roasted malt flavor that makes this not-so-heavy stout, creamy and ever so smooth. It has a subtlety that surprises and converts even the most reticent stout drinker.

Black color; creamy head. Aroma of roasted malt and milk chocolate or chocolate drink (strange!). Good body based on the roasted malt and caramel; high bitterness. Just a bit weak at the end.

12oz bottle. Deep reddish black, with a long-lasting thick, one finger brown head. Aroma is a bit faint; roasted malt, with some cocoa powder and vanilla. Good flavor, roasted malt, coffee, ash, and dark chocolate. Body is a fairly thin. Bitter coffee finish. Smooth and easy to drink.

Pours a dark brown color with a tan head. Aroma is of roasted malts, chocolate, coffee, dark fruits, and sweet malts. Lacks a little on the begining flavor of this one. Definitely creamy as the description suggests. Has flavors of roasted malts, chocolate, and coffee in the middle and finishes with a bitterness I wasn’t really expecting. If the begining of the flavor had a little more then this brew would be pretty good. Still a decent stout though.

It looks and pours the way a stout should - deep opaque brown, almost black, with a rich tan head. Aroma is stouty and smoky with hints of roasted coffee. In the flavor, smokiness predominates; there are hints of coffee and chocolate. Hop bitterness is strong but not overwhelming. It feels a bit on the thin side, but it is smooth and satisfying.

Pours an absolute pitch with a massive dark head on top. Aroma is big malts. chocolate, yeasty note, and a slightly metallic odor. Flavor is big, dark chocolate, sweet malts, a nutty midsection, and a bitter, dry finish. Not the biggest or most complex stout ever, but probably a lot better than the average rating suggests. Sometimes subtlety is a strength.

Bottle. Typical Stout color. Light tan head, disapating with pour. Nothing too distinct about this stout. Wouldn’t recommend it for those looking for a good stout. Doesn’t hit you with anything really. An average stout.

Mendocino Black Hawk Stout 12 oz bottle Moderate pour in an English pint Unknown brewing (recent?), flown into 05/07 Poured black with deep mahogany highlights with a huge frothy somewhat lasting light brown head with good lacing. Smelt of moderate licorice, molasses, ashes and burnt grain, brown sugar. Taste was upfront moderate bitter burnt grain and sweet molasses followed by a strong burnt grain bitterness and light black licorice and molasses sweetness on a long finish. Palate was medium bodied, slightly oily, softly carbonated and lightly astringent. Overall, I really like this. It’s like a bolder version of Guinness.
