Commercial Description:
Black Hawk Stout retains the big traditional flavors of an Irish-style stout and yet offers a refreshing dry crispness that is rare in many dark beers. "Bottle Conditioned" Black Hawk Stout is replete with a rich, roasted malt flavor that makes this not-so-heavy stout, creamy and ever so smooth. It has a subtlety that surprises and converts even the most reticent stout drinker.

Bottle. Pours a nice dark black with a tan head. Roasted malt aroma. Tastes of coffee and chocolate flavors. Drinks nicely with a fairly light body. Lingering smooth finish. A nice beer.

Dark black-brown in color. Very thin tan head. Aroma of a bowl of cooked oatmeal, maple , and some licorice (or anise). Very dry!! Flavors of coffee. very light and thin. all most watery. slightly sweet as well. Very short palate.

Bottled. Pitch black, opaque colour with a thick, longlasting brown head. Aroma is chocolate, roasted malts and some toffee. Also a bit spices. Flavour is spices, caramel, roasted malts and coffee. Some slight bitterness in finish. It feels slightly sweet and the palate is quite thin. Good stout, but nothing very exciting.

12oz bottle. Pitch black and opaque. Thick, clinging ring of tan head. Bready caramel nose with hints of anise. Smooth and rounded. Full bodied. Sweet caramel and coffee. Lively. Anise and fruity. Dry hoppy finish. Citrus hops and bitter chocolate. Maple note. Sweeter example of the style.

Pours very dark brown, very thick looking. There is a healthy brown head. The aroma has roasted malt, chocolate, some anise and coffee. There is also some hop spice coming through. Medium bodyu with some sharp carbonation. Starts with roasted malt with some char and coffee. The finish brings in some chocolate and piney hops. Nice hearty stout.

Draught at the brewery, saratoga springs. Pretty good stout, flavored malts, creamy and smooth. Mendocino and Old Saratoga are quality and make great beers.

bottle 12 oz. This stout is OK but nothing to write home about. Not very far into medium bodied, somewhat thin with a moderately sweet stout flavored hardball candy aspect to it. Hops & bitterness noticable but I like bigger stouts. Wouldn’t hesitate to drink again if it was the only show in town. (after reading some ratings): Yes...I got a touch of licorice as well.

Disappointing from the pour, a slow tilted pour that caused a 9 inch glass with 99% bubbles. Never seen that one before. Regardless, nothing special about this one. Typical chocolate malts and such. Nothing creamy about it, actually a little choppy and thin on the tongue. Shows some nuttiness, but too much burn from misplaced flavors. No thank you.
