Commercial Description:
Black Hawk Stout retains the big traditional flavors of an Irish-style stout and yet offers a refreshing dry crispness that is rare in many dark beers. "Bottle Conditioned" Black Hawk Stout is replete with a rich, roasted malt flavor that makes this not-so-heavy stout, creamy and ever so smooth. It has a subtlety that surprises and converts even the most reticent stout drinker.

Bottle, poors black with little head. Scent of malt and alittle chocolate. Taste is very dry and bitter. After taste like coffee with no cream or sugar. Not very impressed here.

Black pour with a small tan head. Nice aroma of coffee and hops. Flavor is a very roasty malt and coffee, with a light hint of chocolate. Dry with a long, bitter finish. Crisp from carbonation. A very excellent dry stout. So this is the stout that is mixed with Eye of the Hawk ale to make the Black Eye Ale black and tan. I can see where it would be a good choice for such a blend, and in fact, I liked it a lot. Mendocino gets some pretty meager ratings here, but this is the fifth brew I have tried from them and I liked them all. Good stuff. $6.49 for a six at Total Wine & More, Jacksonville FL.

Decent dry stout. Pours a dark black with a thin, off-white head. Roasted malt in the nose, sweetened coffee. Flavor is rather thinner than I expected, a bit on the watery side with some coffee-like notes. Certainly not a rich stout. Decent enough middle-of-the-road offering, though.

Opaque brown. Old coffee scent. Does in fact taste like the dregs of coffee. Quite watery.

Nice black body with a light volumed, tan head. Sweet aroma, roasted malts with some light fruit accents. Bland body, way too watery and far too much of a tea taste for this to be a stout.

Black color with a thin off-white head. Aroma of chocolate and roasted malt with some light bittering. Bitter flavor with sweet coffee and chocolate.

Had this one bottled in Lombard, Illinois. Excellent specimen. Completely opaque and black, a little bit less sweet than most stouts, some notes of coffee and chocolate and ... is that Jagermeister?? This was outstanding.

Pitch black color with decent head and retention. This one lacks in smell. It has a cheap coffee/roasted malt nose. The taste is a little better but somewhat similar. This beer is worth a try but it’s definitely lacking in complexity for a stout. A nice offering if you’re stuck in a state with an abv cap.
