Taste is very dry and bitter. After taste like coffee with no cream or sugar. Not very impressed here. yayforbeer (648), Orange Park, Florida, USA
| 3.6 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 15/20 | Jun 17, 2006 Black pour with a small tan head. Nice aroma of coffee and hops. Flavor is a very roasty malt and coffee, with a light hint of chocolate. Dry with a long, bitter finish. Crisp from carbonation. A very excellent dry stout. So this is the stout that is mixed with Eye of the Hawk ale to make the Black Eye Ale black and tan. I can see where it would be a good choice for such a blend, and in fact, I liked it a lot. Mendocino gets some pretty meager ratings here, but this is the fifth brew I have tried from them and I liked them all. Good stuff. $6.49 for a six at Total Wine & More, Jacksonville FL. | 2.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 4/5 | 5/10 | 3/5 | 11/20 | Jun 15, 2006 Decent dry stout. Pours a dark black with a thin, off-white head. Roasted malt in the nose, sweetened coffee. Flavor is rather thinner than I expected, a bit on the watery side with some coffee-like notes. Certainly not a rich stout. Decent enough middle-of-the-road offering, though. starfireming (309), Richmond, Virginia, USA
| 2.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 5/5 | 4/10 | 3/5 | 11/20 | Jun 13, 2006 Opaque brown. Old coffee scent. Does in fact taste like the dregs of coffee. Quite watery. Numenor (869), Richmond, Virginia, USA
| 2.7 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 4/10 | 3/5 | 9/20 | Jun 13, 2006 Nice black body with a light volumed, tan head. Sweet aroma, roasted malts with some light fruit accents. Bland body, way too watery and far too much of a tea taste for this to be a stout. maniac (2628), Richmond, Virginia, USA

Completely opaque and black, a little bit less sweet than most stouts, some notes of coffee and chocolate and ... is that Jagermeister?? This was outstanding. timtheenchanta (70), Clemson, South Carolina, USA
| 3.4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 14/20 | Jun 4, 2006 Pitch black color with decent head and retention.
This one lacks in smell. It has a cheap coffee/roasted malt nose.
The taste is a little better but somewhat similar. This beer is worth a try but it’s definitely lacking in complexity for a stout. A nice offering if you’re stuck in a state with an abv cap.
