Commercial Description:
Black Hawk Stout retains the big traditional flavors of an Irish-style stout and yet offers a refreshing dry crispness that is rare in many dark beers. "Bottle Conditioned" Black Hawk Stout is replete with a rich, roasted malt flavor that makes this not-so-heavy stout, creamy and ever so smooth. It has a subtlety that surprises and converts even the most reticent stout drinker.

(Bottle 35,5 cl) Pours black and opaque wit a tall, handsome head with good retention. Light aroma of roasted malt. Medium body with notes of dry, lightly burned and somewhat ashy malt, with an underlying fruity edge. Lightly burned, bitter finish. A very decent dry stout. 270306

Pours black with a thin tan head. Not much head retention. Weak aroma with hints of chocolate, coffee and roasted malts. Taste was the same with a bit of raisin underneath. The alcohol content seems off to me. I would have guessed that is was a lot higher. Not offensive in anyway, but in terms of Stouts I have had better.

Pours blacker than any nonimperial I’ve ever poured with a nice light brown head. The aroma is not huge, though it is pleasing: Raisinette’s and yeast with charcoal. The palate is smooth and a bit creamy, with some chalkiness that was slightly offputting. The flavor is rich and robustly roasted and yet rather sweet, and not just for a dry stout. I’m picking up stone fruits and chocolate with obvious coffee overtones. The lingering coffee turns into a pleasing charcoal after a while. I really enjoyed this.

Great looking beer- just extremely dark with a brown head. Aroma is malty with raisins, caramel. Flavour is very strong- roasty and surprisingly sweet like raisins again, caramel. A bitter roasty finish. I like it!

Thin and watery for a stout - more like a porter. Nothing distincitve in a positive or negative sense.

It was dark brown in color with a nice brown head. It had a chocholate taste that was very smooth in texture and a nice finish.

Sampled from a 12 oz brown bottle this beer poured a black color with a small dark brown head. The aroma is roasty malts and floral hops. The mouthfeel is far too thin for a stout. The flavor is strong roasty and toasty malts with a bitter floral hop undertone. The beer is a bit sweeter than I would have expected but still way too thin.

The first few whiffs from this 12 oz bottle had me worried. A sour aroma and taste covered up what might have been a nice roasted malt and hops flavor. Was this a bad bottle, or a confirmation of some of the other recent poor ratings?
