Commercial Description:
Black Hawk Stout retains the big traditional flavors of an Irish-style stout and yet offers a refreshing dry crispness that is rare in many dark beers. "Bottle Conditioned" Black Hawk Stout is replete with a rich, roasted malt flavor that makes this not-so-heavy stout, creamy and ever so smooth. It has a subtlety that surprises and converts even the most reticent stout drinker.

Thanks to beer_hawk for the sample. Pours dark brown with a thin tan head. Smells of roasted malt, some coffee. Taste is bitter with some chocolate and coffee notes.

Bottle. A black color with a nice tan head. Light smoked malt aroma. Coffee, smoked wood, and hop undertones in the flavor. Medium body and a dry texture.

Bottle from Whole Foods, San Diego. Very dark brown colour with a large milk chocolate head. Aroma is roasty with a bit of chocolate. Thinnish body, but suitable for a dry stout. Mellow flavour with some burnt malt and nice bitter chocolate notes coming through as it warms. A bit of dark cherry in there as well. I tend to prefer bigger bodied stouts, but this was quite nice.

Pour is a deep black with a small white head. Aroma is dark chocolate but you have to use your imagination to find it. Flavor is a bit of coffee and chocolate but just like the aroma all of this is pretty weak. If you could make a bland stout this would be it.

12oz bottle from fordest. Pours a black color with a light tan head that is frothy. Nose is light dark fruits, some malt and bakers chocolate. taste is semi thin with a light bitter after taste. A chocolateness ensues after swallowing. Very plain, smooth, light chocolate, malt, roastiness make up the mouth.

Bottle. Poured out a rich brown color with a small tan head, not quite as thick as most stouts. Dark chocolate, roasted malt and a bit of yeasty bread on the nose. The taste was mostly roasted malt with some chocolate, coffee, dry hops and even a little vanilla flavor. Pretty thin on the palate for a stout, but it was smooth. Not bad, not great, I actually would have thought it was a porter if it had a bit more sweetness.

Semi fruity & malty aroma. Taste follows of roasted malt & semi-fruity (apple raisin) and pepper. Semi-bitter. Medium bodied and low carbonation.
