The first beer I had from the pack I thought was very good, but the next two (including this stout) have been wildly average. The stout is nice and black, good stout aroma, tan head that quickly fades. But overall nothing that sets it apart. It’s not bad though, and that’s what really counts. I’m sure I’ll be able to struggle through the next two bottles. lumpsowers (252), Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, USA
| 3.2 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 2/5 | 7/10 | 2/5 | 13/20 | Sep 30, 2008 Zero head, no lacing, black color. Light aroma is smoky, nutty. Flat carbonation, and watery for a stout, palate is disappointing. Low flavor, smoky, nutty, malty, with alcohol. All around not what I’m looking for in a stout, but not bad. sneezey (110), Hackettstown, New Jersey, USA
| 3.1 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 2/5 | 11/20 | Sep 20, 2008 Not bad but not perfect. Very nice roasted aroma to start with a thoroughly dark heavy color. The taste is good but doesn’t last and leaves just a hint of an off note at the end. Not quite as thick as you would think, probably because it’s a bit over carbonated. Reasonable. noncaloric (622), Madison, Wisconsin, USA
| 3.1 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 6/10 | 3/5 | 12/20 | Sep 14, 2008 Updated: Mar 9, 2009Aroma: Roasted malts, a little chocolate. Appearance: Dark brown, nearly black. One finger of tan head leaves only temporary, spotty lace. Flavor: Starts off with a nice burst of roast malts with a cranberry edge. This just fades, not much substance to the middle, and then a bitter vegetal finish. Palate:</b Nice carbonation at the front, becoming smooth if a little thin. biggmike (480), Hattiesburg, Mississippi, USA
| 3.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 14/20 | Sep 13, 2008 This beer poured an attractive black color with a nice tan head that lasted a while. The aroma was of roasted malt with notes of coffee. The flavor was also of roasted malt, chocolate, and coffee with a bit of the hops coming through. The mouthfeel was pleasant. This was easy drinking and an enjoyable beer. smith4498 (912), Miami, Florida, USA

Flavor of roasted malt with some bitterness. Thin body for a stout. Minimal carbonation and a creamy mouthfeel. daknole (2975), Plantation, Florida, USA
| 2.4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 3/5 | 4/10 | 2/5 | 9/20 | Sep 12, 2008 The rater before me nailed this one...is it really a stout? Very odd. seems like a weak porter or even a brown beer of some type. I dont know where the brewer went wrong, but this one missed. Aroma is ok but the flavor is watery, weak and the finish is totally off. arobe35 (23), Baton Rouge, Louisiana, USA
| 3.2 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 13/20 | Sep 9, 2008 Crisp, light, easy down....is this really a stout? I like this beer, but I did expect a little more bite. Black Hawk seems to lack the molasses caramel flavor I despise, so that is a plus. Overall...not a bad brew, but probably wouldn’t buy again.
