Oct 2, 2007 It poured a nice golden color with a thin white head. aroma was a mix of hops and a slightly corn like malt note. Flavor was bitter but it seemed to be almost sour at times. could have been better

Sep 28, 2007 pours light amber with a thin white head. dry & hoppy, lots of grapefruit bitterness. a little taste of dates and some pine. not a bad american pale, but also not a great one.

Sep 25, 2007 Color is somewhat lighter than many pales and is almost honey in appearance. Aroma is nice and well hopped. Flavor is, as expected, quite hopped but some malt balances things nicely. Some pine in the taste and a bit of bitterness. A nice pale ale.

Sep 22, 2007 (Bottle) Pours a dark golden color with white head. Nice dry-hopped aroma with a good balance of mild malts and hops. Nothing too over-the-top, but an enjoyable beer... and in my opinion one of the best they produce.

Sep 20, 2007 Bottle. Slightly hazy gold color with strong carbonation but a razor-thin white head. Nice hoppy bitterness. Solid APA overall.

cloudy light amber, thick frothy head, sweet malt plus spicy hop aroma, good malt body, tart spicy hop flavor with lots of tasty grapefruit essence, lingering hoppy finish with a slight bitterness

no grapefruit and the hop flavor is not as aparent being repllaced by bitterness, nice sweetness to balance the hops and bitterness, could be a nice session beer

Aug 18, 2007 Whoa, the Blue Heron (bottle) is an interesting beer--a much lighter gold color than I expected, a little more haze than I expected, and a way different taste than I expected.
I don’t really know what’s going on with the "special yeast" that Mendocino is using in this pale ale, but something is giving this beer a incredibly pungent, fruity aroma. I know about esters and the resultant banana smells, but I usually get that from hefeweizens. Of course, as a pale ale, the Blue Heron has substantial hoppy bitterness, but there’s way more going on (and it’s not just the usual citrus, pine or caramel that usually accompanies beers of this style). I’m definitely diggin’ on this one right now.
