Commercial Description:
Eye of the Hawk is an excellent, strong, rich bodied ale that is "Bottle Conditioned" to perfection. "Eye" is coppery reddish-amber in color and its unique taste is the result of a judicious mix of caramel and pale malted barley, balanced with Cluster, Cascade and Saaz hops. This gives the Eye its luxurious flavor, substantial mouth-feel and that slightly dry finish.

So Mendocino Brewing is in New York State? And I thought it was in Mendocino. Here is another in their series of bird ales. This 12 ounce bottle has a strong, grainy aroma and a rich amber color. A rich brew with a good balance of malts and hops, and hints of bourbon too. I can’t think of another beer that tastes quite like this, so it gets a point for uniqueness. Bready, with touches of herbs, metal, and alcohol, and a pleasant hopped-up finish.

Pours clear deep gold with copper core and weak head. The aroma is very sweet and flowery with floral hops. The taste begins with a rush of floral hop bitterness followed by roasted malts. It becomes increasingly sugar sweet midway where a load of late addition sweet floral hops flavor (presumably) adds to the sugary malts sweetness. I’m not sure I care for over the top floral and spice hopped beers. Taste is like an English IPA – American Strong Ale combo.

Pours a medium gold that is clear with a large white head. There is a faint aroma of malt but not much else. The taste is sweet and there’s not much else I can say about it. Pretty average.

Light brown out of the bottle, the foam head disappeared rather quickly and completely. There was only a slight hop aroma. Initially this beer hit the tongue sweet but quickly overwhelmed the tongue and mouth with bittering hops. It is rather smooth except for some harsh bitters, hides the alcohol nicely. I would have guessed a 5-6% abv. Nice beer, but have to be in mood for the bitterness.

Solstice party, Canyon, CA. Bottle. Drunk straight from bottle as I was handed this beer without really wanting it. Tasted sweeter than I expected, almost cloyingly so, moderated eventually by lots of sharp, citric hops. High carbonation, which I don’t enjoy in bitters. Worth a trying at home? Can’t say that I am sure...

Pours a light red-orange with about a finger of off-white, foamy head. Sweet caramel malt dominates the odor. Very sweet initial taste, with a strong front of cane sugar and raisins which fades into a gentle hoppy bitterness. A good beer which masks the alcohol pretty well.

This is a very good beer for the price, along with most all of Mendocino Brewing Company’s brews. Hoppy and refreshing.

Found for $6 for a six-pack at Binny’s. Real nice beer for the price. Pours a reddish copper. Yeasty nose with a good hop profile. Has a bitter flavor with a powdery yeast finish. Caramel and buttery maltiness. Reminds me of a English bitter. I enjoyed this ale much better as it warmed.
