Commercial Description:
Eye of the Hawk is an excellent, strong, rich bodied ale that is "Bottle Conditioned" to perfection. "Eye" is coppery reddish-amber in color and its unique taste is the result of a judicious mix of caramel and pale malted barley, balanced with Cluster, Cascade and Saaz hops. This gives the Eye its luxurious flavor, substantial mouth-feel and that slightly dry finish.

Poured to a slightly hazy, orangeish color, with a nice off-white head that lingered well and left good lacing on the glass. Pleasant aroma of malty toffee, with a hint of hops. Mouthfeel was slightly tingly and the taste was a good blend of the sweet toffee and slightly grassy hops, all leading to a nice long finish. This was a much better beer than I was expecting.

Bottled. Thanks Fredrik. Golden colour. Pretty big head. Big malty, almondy nose. Rich fruity flavour with big maltiness and light smokey. Bit too sweet to be considered well-crafted. Bottle was about 1/2 a year old.

2 ounce sample at 99 Bottles tasting. This is one of Mendocino’s bottle-conditioned select ales. It poured a rich yellow. The nose is primarily caramel with slight spiciness and earthiness to complement. The flavor is similar. The finish is rather dry and the mouthfeel is pleasant and tingly. I liked this quite a bit.

22 oz bottle into an English Pint glass. Pours fairly clear golden yellow color, almost like a pilsner, with a tiny white foamy head. Aroma smells of candied malts, honey, and a light peach note. The flavor is very sweet in the beginning touching on the malt character, which then moves into more of a honey filled and lightly bittered hop note into the finish. Fairly one dimensional. Lingering bitterness. I could not believe this one was 8% when I looked it up, you can’t taste it at all! Decent brew, would not go out of my way for this ever though.

Poured an amber color with a nice head. It was a little bitter with the initial drink and melloed or got used to it after finishing it.

Deep amber with an off white head. Aroma of sweet malt, caramel, and some fruit. More of the same in the flavor. Medium hop finish. Alcohol well hidden. I thought this was a well made, enjoyable strong ale.

Clear copper-golden with sweet, sugary malt aroma. Sweet flavour with hop notes. Farily bitter with tinny finish.

On tap. Sweet syrupy with caramel... Too sweet. Over ripe melon fruity flavor.
