Rich bronze, clear, hop vigor, sharp but satisfying, with lots of classic barleywine characteristics with its malt balance. Needs to tone down the alcohol. Perhaps the bottle I have in my closet will be ready in another year. // re-rate with another bottle: not as hot, though only marginally a higher rating. In particular, a strong burnt caramel edge to the nose. Relatively easy drinking and a decent compliment to my vegetable side dish of spiced roasted squash. legion242 (1587), Richardson, Texas, USA
| 3.3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 10/10 | 4/5 | 6/10 | 2/5 | 11/20 | Oct 22, 2005 Garnet color. Firm head. Nose was a nice penetrating malt. Dry sweetness. More hops then I would like in a BW. Alcohol is evident. Too evident. Hairofthedog (419), San Diego, California, USA
| 3.3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 13/20 | Oct 17, 2005 The beer poured a brownish orange color w/ slight lasting head and lacing. The flavor was citrus, pine, malty sweetness, and caramel. The aroma was the same. The mouthfeel was light to medium bodied and creamy. jaymobrown (1360), Chicago, Illinois, USA
| 3.1 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 3/5 | 6/10 | 2/5 | 14/20 | Oct 11, 2005 A thick malted shake type of drink. Really, really sweet. Overly so. Sort of like a thick chocolate milk with a bunch of sugar thrown in. Malt, caramel. There was a grainy quality to this. Decent, but the sweetness really dominates everything else and becomes nearly unbearable. shendrix (478), Waukesha, Wisconsin, USA
| 2.4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 5/10 | 4/5 | 4/10 | 3/5 | 8/20 | Oct 7, 2005 Caramel hued and tasting of such, along with a hint of unsweetened chocolate... and then the vodka aftertaste hits you. Woodsmoked vodka at that. If I had WANTED vodka, this might not have been bad. As a beer, though, this thing is largely undrkinkable in quantity. SuIIy (1486), Jamaica Plain, Massachusetts, USA

Aroma of prunes and raisins, with malt and yeast. Taste is plummy and doughy, some chocolate notes. ivan9856 (130), Arlington, Virginia, USA
| 3.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 3/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | Sep 24, 2005 Deep copper body with smallish tan head and little lacing. The aroma suggests plum, raisin, dark chocolate and molasses. Initial palate is syrupy sweet but cleans up quickly with appropriate hopping. Mid-palate features the flavors presented in the aroma that round into a dry finish with a conspicuous alcohol gusto. rudolf (1786), Buffalo, New York, USA
| 3.7 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 15/20 | Sep 22, 2005 Nose has rasins, grapes, plums, cocoa, tobacco. Deep rich copper body with a frothy head that quickly disappears. Flavor is tobacco, plum, brown sugar, vinous (reminds me of an old ale.) Chocolate notes in the bitter tannin-ey finish. Nice creamy body. If this beer wasn’t so hot it would easily get bumped up to a 17.
