Commercial Description:
White Hawk is a traditional IPA .The IPA recipe is based on the original 1880 brew that was sent to India for the British troops. The advent of India Pale Ale was born of a need to supply beer in the 1800's to British troops in India. This hearty, heavily hopped ale was brewed to endure the rigors of the long voyage from Great Britain.

White Hawk Original IPA was launched in California in early 2002 to meet the demand for a unique India Pale Ale. Consumer response for White Hawk IPA exceeded expectations and it is fast gaining a loyal following both in 6 pack and on draft.

Nice medium copper color makes for a nice looking beer. It has a smallish light colored head that doesn’t last. Aroma is of tart hops with some malt in the background. First taste is tart grapefruit and bitterness. The grapefruit dominates. As the beer warms malt begins to come out giving some balance. I like beers that are multi-faceted and this moved nicely from tart to sweet. IPAs aren’t in my preferred styles list but this one was interesting and enjoyable.

12 oz bottle. Poured gold to copper in color with off white head and decent lacing. Nice aroma of sweetness and hop notes. Full hop flavor with a sweet malt backbone in the background. The hops taste like mostly early addition bittering pine hops which are pretty much right on for the style. This is a nice IPA but nothing there to set it apart from the sea of IPA brews.

This is a pretty mild IPA, like in the English style, and is very malty. For my palate, which is used to big American IPAs, it is sort of a letdown, but not bad. It pours a flat-looking reddish amber. Its smell is very malty, without even a hint of hops. Mouthfeel is a bit harsh, this beer feels a bit over-carbonated and the maltiness feels unbalanced. This beer is weird in that it is oddly wheat-y instead of being hoppy, which seems out-of-character for an IPA.

Not bad. Pours cloudy amber, sea foam head. Good lacing. Light mouthfeel, smooth hop bitterness because of the malty imbalance. No way to tell how fresh the bottle is so maybe it was towards end of shelf life. Otherwise I would compare it to the Sam Smith IPA.

12oz trader joes. This is a decent IPA and there is nothing special or unique about it. The taste is pretty much right in line with all the other IPA’s of the world, with more hops than the average beer. If you are rating this beer against all other IPA’s it would be right in the middle of the pack. Not great, not aweful, just decent.

Bottle. Sweet and malty, only slightly yeasty nose, grapefruit and citric tang with some nice breadiness. Hops bring an interesting floral note - almost like white grape. Amber-orange with a stocky, lacing, foamy beige head. Very hoppy, slightly rough and gritty taste. Not quite brutally bitter, rather a strong bitterness that can be enjoyed. Full, filling body. Very dry, bready and resinous aftertaste. Short of being thrilled, I am very happy with this!

Good beer but not a lot of complexity for an IPA. I personally thought it was just very hoppy, with little to no fruit, floral, citrus or pine aroma or taste. Taste was very bitter, but for how bitter and sharp this beer was it was smooth throughout.

This IPA is like an old Ford Mustang - classic yet simple. The beer doesn’t over dazzle with mega-hops. It has all the right stuff in the right places. And I will drink to that......cheers!
