Commercial Description:
This special edition Winter Ale is a smooth, full-bodied Oatmeal Stout. A rich blend of roasted barley and chocolate malts imparts wonderful coffee and chocolate flavors and aromas. The soft creaminess of this ale comes from the generous amounts of Warrior and East Kent Golding hops.

Pours black with an average-sized light brown head. Cocoa coffee aroma. The flavor follows the aroma with a sweet finish. Thin bodied.

Pours dark dark brown, this was aged more than a year, virtully no head. Chocolate aromas. Very smooth and the mellowed astringency, and softened burntness of a formerly probably over-the-palate oatmeal stout. Full mouthfeel. Very drinkable. Superb.

Reading prior reviews, I would assume mine aged too long. 0 head low carbonation little aroma, Tasted ok with hints of chocolate and coffee flavoring, Wish I’d gotten ahold of a fresher one.

Objectively speaking: Bought this in NJ, last October. A very chocolatey stout with less oatmeal and sweetness than expected.
I like: Pitch black pour, tall and frothy tan head that would belong on a Belgian. Fair complexity to the roast: Coffee, Chocolate, liquorice, burnt toast... Appealing fudge nuances, dessert-like. Medium-full body, rather creamy. Limited hops, no citrus interference. Did not feel like 7%.
I dislike: Rather sharp carbonation. Metallic finish, drying out a whole lot. Beginning of oxidation. Timid oatmeal. A bit too acidic, though mostly from the malt.

12 oz bottle from Total Wine in Huntersville, NC. Pours a dark brown color with a light brown head. Aroma is roasted malts and some coffee and chocolate notes. Taste is...wow...robust dark malts, coffee, chocolate...sweet and strong. This is impressive. A must try if you get the chance.

Bottle Black pour with huge tan head. Chocolate aroma arises durring the pour followed by chocolate, coffee and roasted malt. Rich flavor of roasted malts and coffee, a bit of oatmeal. A very pleasant brew.

A brown head tops an almost black body on this surprise brew. Coffee, chocolate, oatmeal, and molasses greet the nose. Rich and creamy body with minimal carbonation. The flavor was slightly sweet with the coffee and chocolate notes evident. A pleasant surprise from Mendocino.
