Commercial Description:
Also known as "It's the great pumpkin ale Charlie Brown" our pumpkin ale is a seasonal favourite. We add roasted pumpkin with the grain in the mash tun to produce a uniquely flavoured wort. The wort is then boiled with a light addition of Goulding hops cinnamon and nutmeg to accent the beer. Come join us for a pint in late October till it is gone.

Note - with about 3 years between rates I’m not sure if this is a new pumpkin seasonal, or a reworked version of the old one. Seemed a lot better than the old ratings though, so maybe they’ve learned something in three years. On tap at the Merchant Ale House. Pours a clear orange with a thin white head. Pumpkin flesh, cinnamon, nutmeg, and a bit of clove. Light malt, a bit more spice, and a touch of grain at the back end. Finishes with some more light spice, and a bit more dry grain.

Mixed spice aroma with yeast? Deep amber, small white head. Faint taste of pumpkin, light bodied, sweet, average.

Cask at Volo Cask Day 2006. Pours a cloudy orange with a small creamy white head. Aroma of Xmas spices, some light sourness and pumpkin. Flavour of slightly sour fruit, pumpkin, spices, some light malt and some hops in the finish. Medium bodied. Pretty good for what it is.

On cask at Volo Cask Days, 2006. Hazy orange, small white head. Decent pumpkin spice aroma. Malt and pumpkin spice in taste with a nice bitter finish. Very quaffable, if not a little muted in flavour. Nice job Merchant, thanks for sharing your stuff in T.O!

Draught. Orange-copper body with a creamy white head. Interesting aroma of pumpkin, oranges, bread, and sugar. Sweet pumpkin flavour, ginger bread, and metal. A somewhat interesting profile but it still has to work within the limitations of a relatively boring/weird style.

Cask. At Volo Cask Day 2006. Poured hazy orange with a decent fizzy head. The aroma was quite vegetal, but in this case that’s not a bady thing - like fresh pumpkin and squash, mild sweet pumpkin pie spices, and plenty of funky, almost sour yeast. Tasted very much of fresh pumpkin, less spicy and sweet, dry stale hops in the finish. Average body, probably just the power of suggestion that made it seem to have the consistency of tomato juice, nicely carbonated and a lightning-quick finish. Yes, it’s definitely real pumpkin, but it’s just so-so as a a beer.

Draught (keg) at Volo Cask Day 2006. Orange colour with a small head. Aroma of spice (ginger, nutmeg) with a sour tinge. Flavour has a mild spiciness with hints of pumpkin and soft malt. OK, but not very exciting.

Tap. Clean, true pumpkin seed aroma, sweet sugar, fruity character. Appearance: Hazy amber with neat white, thick top. Thin bodied with strong pumpkin character. I found also some gingerbread and nutmeg. Very fruity, not enough malt to somewhat balance it out.Extra point for being true and natural.
