ciderguy (97), Chambersburg, Pennsylvania, USA Dec 17, 2003 Nose was faint with a light hint of exceptionally sweet apples (perhaps a granny smith varietal). Pour was essentially flat and a very light straw color. Reminded me of pouring a ginger ale. Flavor was quite weak offering little to get excited about. Very little aftertaste, but I guess that's to be expected when there's not much to start with. Not the best I've had, but quite glad I had the chance to try it. Cheers to mutant for sending this my way.
Thylacine (179), Tasmania, Australia Oct 6, 2007 Clear and pale greenish yellow. with medium carbonation. Not that different to their Draught version only slightly more tart. Crisp and refreshing but nothing special. jkm (153), Australia Oct 6, 2007 Clear pale yellow and slightly greenish in colour, medium carbonation, sweet with crisp dry finish. Nice. chrismwpcs (66), South Hedland, Australia Sep 24, 2007 Well fuck my brown dog. Not being a cider drinker, I was pretty impressed with this concoction. It has a nice carbonation, tart yet sweet overtones and is very refreshing. Hats off Tazzie. Well done!
PS: highlandlad, you obviously need a life ;/ drink it to and enjoy. Sheesh.... ALLOVATE (1127), Perth, Australia Oct 27, 2005 Not big on dry ciders so here goes! Tasted this from the stubby and poured it into a tallboy glass. Brilliant, palest yellow body with intermittent bubbles raising no head. Carbonation was that sparce I feared the sample was still, but this proved not the case in the mouth. Subtle and clean, spicy apple and riesling white wine nose. In the mouth, the initial carbonic bite obscured things but it quickly waned to a prickly feel on the tongue. Exceptionally clean apple and white grape flavours, very dry and subtle with a finish that was sharp and crisp. Ultra feather-weight in body and a little watery, there was nothing to really complain about in this one. Just was a little bland, but if drank quickly it could prove to make an ass out of anyone. (37.5cL, Vintage Cellars, 24/05/07) highlandlad (1200), Sydney, Australia Aug 23, 2005 Ozswill Macro Dry Ciderfest: Mercury Special DryCider vs Strongbow Dry Cider. Australia’s most widely available dry ciders sampled side by side in a sensational winner-takes-bugger-all contest. (In other words, a feeble attempt to enliven a dull tasting.) Appearance: a couple of spritely customers. The Mercury has a greenish tinge, while the Strongbow is a classic deep gold (like comparing a riesling and an aged semillon). Nothing between them - 3/5 each. Aroma: the Mercury has plenty of tart green acidity, but with chemical overtones. The Strongbow sample is undermined by stagnant pond water and wet wool overtones. Nothing wrong with the use-by date (May 07), so it can’t be that. Must be sulphur dioxide added to inhibit wild yeasts and improve stability. Very nasty. Mercury 5/10, Strongbow 2/10. Palate: Mercury lacks body but at least it has a genuinely dry finish. Strongbow is fuller and fizzier in the mouth but not nearly as dry in the finish. Mercury 2/5, Strongbow 3/5. Flavour: Mercury is fairly sweet initially, giving way to a tart, dry swallow. Strongbow has some really odd canned peach notes. Must be the added pear juice. Compared to the Mercury, it’s more a fruit salad than a cider. Mercury 5/10, Strongbow 3/10. Overall: the Mercury is not especially characterful but it smells and tastes like a genuine cider. The Strongbow is commercial cider-making at its most mediocre - stinks of preservative and tastes of cheap substitutes. Mercury 10/20 (2.5), Strongbow 6/10 (1.7)
