Commercial Description:
This is the version sold in the US. The brewer's original intent was for a beer of this strength but limitations proprietary to the Dutch market led to him brewing a lower alcohol, sweetened version there. When he started exporting to the US, the original concept of the beer was chosen.
Produced at Gulpener's De Zwarte Ruiter (Black Knight) brewpub, Mestreechs Aajt is a blended beer in which one of the component beers is subject to a wild yeast fermentation and is aged for a year in unlined wood. Very refreshing, traditional style brew.

On tap at the map room. Deep brown w/ a quickly dissipating head. Huge cherry and almond aromas. Equally huge flavors with some added vanilla. Somewhat sour but not overly so. Nice bretta character.

This poured a deep reddish-brown with a halo around the glass in lieu of a head. The aroma was very acrid and vinegary with some underlying cherry. Has kind of a sweet/sour fruity taste, reminding of the cherries from the tree in my yard as a kid. Sour finish.

Beautiful cherry, sour vinegar aroma. Red-brown with some head. Mild sourness but a very strong cherry flavor. Soothing palate, moderately sweet, though a little light. Not rocking my world, but certainly o.k. (2004 Christmas Party, my #4, group?s #9T)

Rating #2 - Bottle (7 3 7 3 16). A brown reddish color (ruby tint in the light) with a laced tan head. Strong sour beery aroma, cinamon, ginger. Sweet berry flavors (cherry), spices, a touch of lambic-like qualities, dry, and tart. Rating #1 - Bottle (5 3 6 3 13). A redish color with a light brown head. Sour cherry, dry and not much spice. It didn’t hold up to style like i wanted it to, although it had a nice aftertaste. Christmas Party 2004 ranked 11/15 (mine) and 9/15 (group).

dark amber in color, nice off-white head, taste of vinegar gives it sourness, also has a smell and taste of cherry. a little too sour for me.

Bottled. Pours a clear, dark amber color. Just a bit of a tan lacing, no real head. Sour nose with aromas of cherries. Nice sourness and maltiness in the taste but both seem a bit thin. Just a bit of dryness that fades quickly with no aftertaste.

33cl bottle, no BBD....slightly sweet Balsamic nose, woody...drinks sweet with an acidic sourness to help get some balance...lingering woodiness. Straightforward beer, not a lot going on, but it is OK...not overly sour, or nearly as much as I’d like...too sweet and too little twang...a bit thin, but cloying body...somehow it reminds me of ketchup.

Very red in color with a thin, tan head. Aroma of white vinegar (I prefer balsamic). It smells like I am getting ready to dye Easter eggs. There is an underpinning of caramel but not much else. Flavor of Sweet Tart candy, some acidity, and a light caramel. This beer tastes like this breweries’ first atempt at this style. Drain pour.
