Commercial Description:
This is the version sold in the US. The brewer's original intent was for a beer of this strength but limitations proprietary to the Dutch market led to him brewing a lower alcohol, sweetened version there. When he started exporting to the US, the original concept of the beer was chosen.
Produced at Gulpener's De Zwarte Ruiter (Black Knight) brewpub, Mestreechs Aajt is a blended beer in which one of the component beers is subject to a wild yeast fermentation and is aged for a year in unlined wood. Very refreshing, traditional style brew.

Dutch tasting session Bunnik. Bottled. Clear brown coloured, small head. Sour oaky nose, balsamic vinegar. Very complex flavour, malts, fruit, vinegar. I really, really like this stuff. Such a shame it isn’t brewed anymore. And even then, this stuff was impossible to get back here (and it’s a Dutch brew!). All we can do is reminisce...

Bottle@DTS. Aroma of cherry, port and a hint of vinegar. Brown color, tiny beige head, fair lace. Very sweet, rusty, sourness stings like a bee, bit sugary. Very well balanced and one of it’s kind. Great beer.

Bottled. Poured clear, deep reddish-brown with a loose-bubbled cap of beige head. The aroma picked up dried sour cherries and old cask paired with green apples.. musty overall and nicely presented.. not too aggressive. The flavor took a while before the sourness kicked in.. and it never became aggressive.. sour cherries and damp, musty oak were the most telling characteristics with a bit of vinegar coming in toward the back.. the sour, woody finish was refreshing. Light-medium bodied with low carbonation and refreshing, building sourness as it progressed. Nice one.

On draft at O’Briens (months ago). Arrived a dark brown and opaque with a large creamy beige head. Faintish aroma, sour fruit, vinegar and a little musty. Sourfruits in the flavor, cider vinegar, wet wood and wooly notes and herby with an astringent finish. Light to medium body and tingly carbonation.

Flip top bottle, from Capone’s (Norristown, PA). Poured ruby brown, with a small off-white head. Beautiful, tart nose, with notes of vinegar, sour cherry, apple, and mead. The aroma had some vinous qualities as well. Flavor was tart and acetic, with sour cherry notes. This was much sweeter and less tart than I expected based on the aroma. Thin bodied. The aroma advertised an intense, sour beer, and I was a bit let down by the flavor.

bottle shared with WeeHeavySD via trade with The_Eepiest, with bikesandbeer. Solid brown-red some tan bubbles up top. Sour fruit on the nose. The body is light and fruity, not super sour, but very tasty. Sad I couldn’t get this while i was living in Nederland.

bottle via trade with The_Eepiest, shared with bikesandbeer. Pours dark reddish brown, almost opaque with a thin tan head. Great sour nose with some light cherry and other sweet fruit notes. Taste is big, sour, vinegary and tasty. Pretty happy with this, a little thinner than I’d like but thats only really a palate issue.
