Commercial Description:
This is the version sold in the US. The brewer's original intent was for a beer of this strength but limitations proprietary to the Dutch market led to him brewing a lower alcohol, sweetened version there. When he started exporting to the US, the original concept of the beer was chosen.
Produced at Gulpener's De Zwarte Ruiter (Black Knight) brewpub, Mestreechs Aajt is a blended beer in which one of the component beers is subject to a wild yeast fermentation and is aged for a year in unlined wood. Very refreshing, traditional style brew.

Dark brown with just a few bubbles on top. Nose of lightly tart cherry/dark berry pie, vinegar soaked oak, and subtle hints of chocolate, caramel, and honey. Flavor is similar- a bit more tart. Finishes dry with aged malt and oak. Smooth, medium body. Unique, finesse brew. Very nice.

Pours a very dark garnet that is clear. Minimal head but a fair amount of lacing on the way down. Nose is berry like with an almost inky edge. Flavor is smooth. Berry tones that are strong but not overpowering or overdone. Sweet and even. Feel is close to syrupy. Extremely drinkable. Could go for this a lot, especially at the price. Definitely worth a try...or two.

Appearance: Pours a clear, still, dark brown body. Smell: Aroma of raisins soaked in balsamic vinegar and aged in wood. Taste: Intensesly sweet-sour raisin flavor. Subtle wood character. Finishes sweetish and acetic. Mouthfeel: Medium-thin body. No carbonation. Drinkability: Not really too much to say about this one.

Pours a transparent dark ruby mahogany with hardly any head. Aroma of sweet toasty, doughy, tart cherries with some caramel and light maple syrup. Body starts mostly still with a good viscosity of sweet chewy caramel malt and good balance of tart fruitiness. An enjoyable, quite drinkable Flemish sour.

Shared by Dickinsonbeer. A darker color more like oud bruin. Aroma is lightly sour, light roast, faintly acidic. In general light and lightly sweet. Taste is sweet cherry, very light, not much past that. It’s Dutch but the way I like to think about it is if the Germans made a Flanders Red, this would be it.

Swing-top bottle from State Line. Lovely sour nose, acidic with vinegar and wood. Dark dark ruby pour, comes off looking more like brown, with a quickly-diminished head. Taste is not as sour as expected; indeed, though this is the unsweetened version, there are firm notes of sweetness. Woody with a touch of yeast far in the back, a trace of apple but no sign of vinegar, and a good helping of cherry. End is nice and dry, though, a nice blend of dryth and lightly tartness. This seems very organic, very natural without being raw- very tasty! Medium body with a vinous feel in the throat and around the gums. Not really to style - sourness doesn’t pucker anything - but that makes it all the more sessionable. Extremely refreshing. I’m a big fan!

Bottle sampled. Pours deep murky red with a small beige head. Aroma of vinegar, acidic, and sour cherries. The flavor is sweet, cherries, and finishes with a tart dryness.
