Commercial Description:
This is the version sold in the US. The brewer's original intent was for a beer of this strength but limitations proprietary to the Dutch market led to him brewing a lower alcohol, sweetened version there. When he started exporting to the US, the original concept of the beer was chosen.
Produced at Gulpener's De Zwarte Ruiter (Black Knight) brewpub, Mestreechs Aajt is a blended beer in which one of the component beers is subject to a wild yeast fermentation and is aged for a year in unlined wood. Very refreshing, traditional style brew.

Draught at the Publick House, Brookline, Ma
Wood, Wood, Wood. This tastes like liking a cedar chest, followed by a tongue trip through a bordeaux barrel. Interesting=yes. Tasty= questionable. Middles between dry and sweet, but is overwhelmed by the wood. Finish is looooong. I can see how some love and some hate, but II’m in between.

pours a deep amber hue with a light white head. Aromas of caramel, roses, and ketchup. Flavors of the same with a dry metallic finish.

11.2 oz bottle courtesy of luiss. Thanks! Must say very nervous, i’ve only had one flemmish sour before and it was a la folie, and it was to much for me. Pours a red pour witha thin white head. Smell, oh there it is again, the vinegar. bleh. But actually this one has a plesant taste. It says unsweetened, but its sweet. light taste of vinegar, but smooth and rather non-offensive. I actually gave it to a bud light drinker to try, and past the smell he said. "damn, thats pretty good".

This really doesn’t look very appealing so I feel blessed that it is not as important a factor to me as it is to the rating scale. Pours a chestnut/mahogany cloudy body. A thin ring of carbonation melds to the sides of the glass and is there for the duration. Aroma is at first chocolate covered cherries, a la Kuhnhenn Raspberry Eisbock, just not as intense. Nose also contains caramel malts aplenty and firm yeast. This is an elegantand refined blend of the pleasant characteristics of an oud bruin and a sour red. I have to really pull at it to access its nuances. Flavor is of more chocolate, cherries, orange peel and caramel. Obvious older age has thinned the body, diminished the carbonation and muted the sourness. It also , though, has allowed many flavors to blend into one more complete taste. It is very balanced and well rounded. Finishes mildly tart and not really sweet nor dry. I dig this beer.

The bottle I had must have been unsealed because this beer was completely undrinkable. No head on the pour at all. Thick and dense, but not creamy or carbonated at all. Tart and tangy to the extent that I could not swallow it. Totally awful. Please tell me that it was the bottle?

Clear copper. Bubbly non-head. Sour wet oak aroma with cherries, light brown sugar. Awkward flavor. Okay, but not too interesting. Thin with slight cerdary sourness and nut. Okay beer, but not great. Needs Emeril to kick it up a notch.

Bottle shared by Chuck. Clear brown body under a smattering of small bubbles. Caramel/cherry, oxidized/astringent aroma. Not digging the papery thing. The flavor has the same sweet caramel/cherry base with a slightly tart (grapefruity acid) leather on top. The finish dries out with tart cherries, and is more enjoyable than the start of the flavor. A pleasantly tart sour, just has some flaws.
