Commercial Description:
This is the version sold in the US. The brewer's original intent was for a beer of this strength but limitations proprietary to the Dutch market led to him brewing a lower alcohol, sweetened version there. When he started exporting to the US, the original concept of the beer was chosen.
Produced at Gulpener's De Zwarte Ruiter (Black Knight) brewpub, Mestreechs Aajt is a blended beer in which one of the component beers is subject to a wild yeast fermentation and is aged for a year in unlined wood. Very refreshing, traditional style brew.

On tap at O’Brien’s. Deep red color. Small to medium sized rose colored head. Aroma is tart and fruity. A medium bodied Flemish red. Malts are fruity and tart. Lots of tart and funk. Nice balance of the cherries, fruit and tart with that funky vinegar bite. Very smooth. Nice drinkable beer. Mouthfeel is full and round. Finish is clean and smooth. Aftertaste is tart and sweet.

11.2 fl.oz. flip-top. This ale pours extremely dark with little bits of brown and red showing at the edges. Not too much head, even w/ a hard pour. Opening the flip top was like a nasty vinegar fart, fortunately the general aroma after that was more bearable; cherry, yeast, cider and more vinegar. The tastes varied greatly thoughout the whole experience. The sweet tartness is up front then mixes with some strong malts to fade back to sour. The finish is much like a lambic. Very good, and complex. like $3

Draft at O’Brien’s Pub. Dark brownish red with almost no head. Very wine like on the nose. Sour with cherry and current. the vineousness continued into the flavor. More tart fruit and currant. Pretty tasty.

Pours with no head, very dark red, clear. Rich aroma of cherries, whiskey, with subdued oaky and vinous tones. Taste is laid back compared to the aroma. Mildly sour cherries, fruity sweetness. Lost of dry oak flavor. Finish is dry, vinous. Light but not watery mouthfeel. Very mild for the style, but still quite delicate and well done.

I thought this beer was a total tail-wagger! It poured a clear medium-brown color with a small, creamy, short-lived head. The sour, mouth-watering aroma had strong notes of balsamic vinegar, sour cherry, grapes, mustard and honey. The texture was creamy with lively carbonation. The flavor was smooth and lightly sweet-sour giving away to a lightly bitter finish with a cool aftertaste of honey. Had to buy some on the way home from the tasting to put up for a rainy day.

Bottle poured a clear brown with a small amber head. Aromas of grapes and vinegar. Palate was light bodied and dry. Flavors of light grapes, a bit sour with a dry, bittersweet finish.

Medium brown color with a very light tint of red. Aroma of cherry soda. Flavor is mildly sour, with notes of pepper, cherry, roasted malt and a light twinge of vinegar. A satifying sour finish that is not too puckering or unpleasant. Reminiscent of the Duchess.

I forget who brought this to Paul’s party, but thanks.

Poured brown with a small white head. Delicious aroma of wood and tart cherries. Taste is not as sour as expected, more sweet really, which was rather disappointing. Hate it when a beer’s flavor falls short of the aroma.
