Commercial Description:
This is the version sold in the US. The brewer's original intent was for a beer of this strength but limitations proprietary to the Dutch market led to him brewing a lower alcohol, sweetened version there. When he started exporting to the US, the original concept of the beer was chosen.
Produced at Gulpener's De Zwarte Ruiter (Black Knight) brewpub, Mestreechs Aajt is a blended beer in which one of the component beers is subject to a wild yeast fermentation and is aged for a year in unlined wood. Very refreshing, traditional style brew.

A red-brown beer with no head. The aroma is lovely sour with a clear presence of vinegar. The flavor is also lovely sour - the sourness draw out the mouthwater toward a very dry end. Unfortunately the body is a little thin.

Sparkling clear, deep copper body topped by medium beige head. Aroma is vinegar, vinous, cherry. Taste is mild sweet, sour cherry, light oak. Watery, light-medium body. Very drinkable, a bit unusual for a flemish sour.

Swing top bottle @ DTS. It is a shame Gulpen doesn’t any longer produce this brew. I have been wanting to try this beer for years: my patience was richly rewarded! Cream sherry, caramel, pear, porto in the aroma. The beer has thinned a bit but the flavor remains intense: cream sherry, balasamic vinegar and the last remains of oak. This beer has aged very gracefully. Almost perfect!!

On tap. Poured a dark mahogany color with a small white head. Aroma and tastes of sour apple and some caramel. After drinking 5 IPAs tonight, this was a nice change up (I used this as my dessert beer tonight).

Clear burnished burgundy pour wearing an irregular off-white film. Strong fruit nose, like candied prunes, grapes and peach, evolving into pomegranate and apples as it warms, but not without out of place phenols reminiscent of bee wax. Fruity palate surprises by its “unsweetened” state when it is in fact very sweet and not in a pleasant vinous way, more in a candied apple fashion, which would certainly be more agreeable without the extremely poor body, that shows swiftly fading carbonation that shines by its quick absence and leaves a dulled out mouthfeel to carry unfocused flavours. I’m stunned at how much I preferred the original sweetened and lighter version.
