Commercial Description:
This is the version sold in the US. The brewer's original intent was for a beer of this strength but limitations proprietary to the Dutch market led to him brewing a lower alcohol, sweetened version there. When he started exporting to the US, the original concept of the beer was chosen.
Produced at Gulpener's De Zwarte Ruiter (Black Knight) brewpub, Mestreechs Aajt is a blended beer in which one of the component beers is subject to a wild yeast fermentation and is aged for a year in unlined wood. Very refreshing, traditional style brew.

Swing top bottle @ DTS. It is a shame Gulpen doesn’t any longer produce this brew. I have been wanting to try this beer for years: my patience was richly rewarded! Cream sherry, caramel, pear, porto in the aroma. The beer has thinned a bit but the flavor remains intense: cream sherry, balasamic vinegar and the last remains of oak. This beer has aged very gracefully. Almost perfect!!

Poured a mahogany color with a small head. Initial aroma was big sour with some vinegar. Black cherries and more sour in the taste. Slightly astringent with a dryish finish. Reminded me of the OLD Fantome Black Ghost of 3 or so years ago tho slightly watery. Probably because of the low ABV which I found to be really the only drawback. Update-Now that I have had several bottles of this stuf I love it more and more. Obviously not a session beer but a near godly sour nonetheless.

Dutch tasting session Bunnik. Bottled. Clear brown coloured, small head. Sour oaky nose, balsamic vinegar. Very complex flavour, malts, fruit, vinegar. I really, really like this stuff. Such a shame it isn’t brewed anymore. And even then, this stuff was impossible to get back here (and it’s a Dutch brew!). All we can do is reminisce...

A tasty flemish sour that’s remarkably like Duchesse de Bourgogne. Very sweet yet also slightly tart. Quite true to the best the style has to offer. Delicious golden red/brown color with a thin beige head. Enjoy.

On Tap at Three Floyds Brewpub. Pours a deep ruby mohogany. Nose of tart cherries and aged vinegar. Sweet up front with a nice sour finish. I could drink this all day!

non-saccharin (US) version: Deep garnet. Webby patches of ashen foam cling to the class. Mediocre retention. Splendidly fruity dark malt aroma with cedar, roast, tannins, and spiced black cherries. Touch of brett, medicine, and hay. Lush, feathery soft carbonation elegantly integrates the remarkably composed malt sweetness and lemony tartness. Pillow-soft malts cushion the sharp and snappy tartness. Semi-woody and tannic. Vinous acidity fades as the bready malts continue to build. Notable iron twang is marked with spicy brett. Uncanny softness, throughout, with just enough depth-lending iron harshness. Splash of phenols and spiced cherries. Faint musty mineral note surfaces late, lifting the wild yeast and firm, musty wood aspects from beneath. Buttered caramel merges with understatedly husky malt flavors, continuing to expound on the acidity. Finishes everlastingly fluffy and malty, with subtleties of spiced cherries and tobacco. This is a world-beater, and exemplifies complexity and balance for such a low-gravity beer. Wow!
