Commercial Description:
Introduced New Year's Eve 1999 as our salute to the year 2000. Barley wine is a style of beer referred to as wine because of the high alcohol content (in this case 10.5%). Our barley wine is a nicely balanced beer made with three kinds of malts and bittered with Cascade hops.

Sampler at M&P. Supposedly aged in Gentleman Jack bourbon barrels, this barley wine was complex, flavorful and smooth to drink. After all the trash we went through, this was a welcome end to the evening. I enjoyed it.

Aged in Bourbon at Bailey’s for the Anniversary Party 2008--Poured a deep brown-black body with a swirling off-white head. Sweet bitter buttery nose with a caramel malty spine. Mild bourbon and a hint of booze in finish. Nice!

On nitro tap at Green Dragon which led to a discussion about the pros and cons of nitro taps. Red amber beer. Thick intoxicating aroma almost makes you drunk. Creamy airy body, of course. High alcohol. Seems to be lacking in character and definitive flavour profile.

Pours amber with a small white head. The brewer warned it might be a bit undercarbonated, but it was a lighter bodied barleywine, so it didn’t feel to heavy anyway. Soft palate, smooth caramel and a subtle spiciness to the hops. This was aged in bourbon so it had a nice buttery character, not overwhelming, but very complimentary. This wasn’t over the top, but just a solid easy sipping barleywine, no excess alochol, just smooth and mellow.

[2006 Lucky Labrador Barley Wine & Big Beer Festival] 4oz Taster – This was a cloudy dark amber color. Very sweet and simple profile. Has a peach flavor coming off the brew. Liked the flavor and the rich malts. I was thrown by the little complex flavor that this beer should have. Seemed to come off light to me.

The words "Blast off" will forever by associated by me with Robert Esmie and this beer won’t change that. Hazy amber colour. Old (oxidized) smell is chewy and peachy with thick, fat malts. Quite sweet and simple profile, again a bit peachy. Decent flavour but lacks complexity and flavour development...which you’d expect a 3 year old sample to have.

Draught at Rose and Raindrop, Portland (2003 vintage). Clear pale brown. Nutty roastiness and grapefruity hops up front. Sweet, mature and full bodied. Restrained aromawise, flavourwise it has loads of toffee and alcohol and some crystal malt flavour. Lightly salty finish with fairly low bitterness.

This is a relentless barleywine fron the beginnging and never lets go. Delicious sweetness on the patale, big and malty with alot of alcochol, but never cloying. Lots of fruity and yeastiness coming through in the finish with alot of hop bitterness.
