Davinci (295), Chicago, Illinois, USA Feb 29, 2008 Strangely hazy orange color, more like a IIPA. Smells really cheasy, like hard ripe parmesan, lorraine and emmenthaler. Not bad, but way different than what I was expecting. Malty and cheasy on the palate with an alcohol bite and some hops. Different. frankenkitty (1900), Oak Lawn, Illinois, USA Mar 9, 2007 Light-hazed copper with a soapy, cream-colored head. I’m unimpressed by the mix of aromas... the hops and the malts and the (!?!) stinky feet. Sweet & dry with grapes and coffee and a hoppy ending. I moved on.

sersdf (1000), chicago, Illinois, USA Mar 7, 2007 NotLA3. aroma surprisingly APAis. maltyish perhaps. tastes great. i could call it thin, but any thicker and i’d probably be overwhelmed. hops dominate finish. but malty front. can’t be very alcoholic. Cornfield (4892), Oak Forest, Illinois, USA Mar 6, 2007 A nice malty barley wine from a solid brewing brewpub. It has a sweet toffee and caramel aroma tempered by alcohol and a suggestion of nutty, earthy bitterness. Smooth, sweet, and malty to drink, this was the first warmer I had at the festival to thaw my parts after we were left in line outside on a frigid Chicago Winter evening. I thank Mickey Finn’s for restoring feeling to my extremities and for the tasty, warming beer.

Zeswaft (1000), Seattle, Washington, USA Mar 5, 2007 Cask at NotLA 2007. This was one surprisingly good barley wine. More subdued than the other turbo-hopped barleys that were there. More skewed towards the malts. Caramel and toffee sweetness, and a little bit of warming alcohol. At one point this was in my top 3 of the night but slid to #4.
