Commercial Description:
This ESB (Extra Special Bitter) displays the subtle copery hue of "Old Gold." Its mighty depth of flavor will awaken taste buds and complements "pub" fare such as lamb and game. It is a natural accompaniment with spicy foods. Bronze medal winner at the 1998 World Beer Championships.

Orange hazy color, Earthy hops with biscuit, and citrus (orange) in the aroma. Watery fizzy mouthfeel, earthy taste with a light bitter ending. I'm not that impressed, but it would be nice on a hot day.

Golden copper hue. Small sticky white head. Assertive malts and hops in the nose. Starts sweet, slightly chewy caramel, medium bodied, herbal bittering, english style hop accented finish. Very drinkable, good alcohol.

Smells wheaty and yeasty, with a little bit of wheat in it as well. The flavor has a slight hoppy bite, but it seems that the bitterness comes from more of a citrus base, like a sour grapefruit. It's not a very smooth drinking experience.

The Beast was weak in aroma but had a nice hoppy bitterness. Middle ages was just middle of the road.

Tried on cask! Not too bad. Was hoping for a bit more. This had a timid body to it. I guess if middle ages wanted to produce a nondescript beer, they did a great job. It had the usual warm hop bitterness, and even a bit of oatmeal cookie taste towards the end, not quite creamy. There are certainly much better bitters out there.

Orange hue, with little head and no lacing. Surprising a bit more body than expected. A sour apple and piney aroma, some spicyness also detected. Hops are noted during the tangy tasting, but not overpowering, minor sweetness, a good ESB.

A light bitter, not very flavorful - slight spiciness - a tiny sweetness that mingles well with the doughy flavors that come into play - pretty well done, but lacking anything that makes me want to revisit it another time.
