Commercial Description:
This ESB (Extra Special Bitter) displays the subtle copery hue of "Old Gold." Its mighty depth of flavor will awaken taste buds and complements "pub" fare such as lamb and game. It is a natural accompaniment with spicy foods. Bronze medal winner at the 1998 World Beer Championships.

Bottle. Pours an orange-copper body with a medium-sized soapy white head. The aroma is floral and perfumey hops - orange and metallic bread properties along with creamy yeast. Creamy soft mouthfeel with sharp pine bitterness and bread malting. Purchased at Premier Gourmet, Buffalo in June of 2006.

Seemingly similar to their IPA, copper color with a big off-white head, nice lacing around the glass, nose full of malt & hops, nicely balanced in the nose & in the flavors as well, but similar to their IPA the hops get you toward the finish of the flavors & in the aftertaste, lots of light malt flavor in the body & in the finish as well, very well-rounded, great session beer as it’s very drinkable & enjoyable, the seem at first to be very abrasive but then back off a bit to allow the nutty maltiness show through, very good bitter

This beer poured with a great big dissorganized white head that reminded me of a root beer float. Clear amber color in my glass. Sharp hop bitterness in the nose. Orange juice sweetness with fruity and lightly bready notes. Long bitter finish that had a little cardboard in it. Okay beer, but not the ESB I would pick again.

Cask -- Nice deep orange body with a great ivroy cascading head. Good hop aroma with some nice malt presence. Roasted malts and light hops dominate the taste, however the body is a bit thin. Clean ending.

Bottle. Nice deep golden orange, very fluffy big white head. Looks nice. Nice earthy hops aroma - light malt and some more citrusy like hops come through as well - nice. Surprisingly rather bitter taste - probably too thin for the style, but otherwise it captures the malt profile of a nice cask bitter (just with a lot of citrus like hops thrown in). Interesting hop linger. Simple and well done, this one surprised me! Nice job middle ages!

From a 12 oz. long neck brown bottle with a short blurb about the ESB on the right side of the label, no bottled/freshness date. Very promising start, poured a semi-hazy amber with a billowing, fluffy, clingy, white head that slowly settled into a sticky, fluffy thin lacing, good carbonation. Had a piney, earthy hop and toasted grainy nose with a buttery yeastiness and fruity maltiness in the background. A crisp, smooth medium bodied mouth feel, very good drinkability. A crisp, mildly bitter earthy hoppiness and a balancing buttery, honey yeastiness and caramel maltiness upfront, a toasted graininess and fruity maltiness showing up towards the end and a dry yeasty, fruity, soft bitter finish. A very quaffable and delicious ESB, well worth seeking out and trying. Acquired in a trade with fellow BR Jah Noth, many thanks!!

Bottled. Mild citrus hop aroma on pale gold body w/ white-beige froth head. Light palate but quite bitter w/ just enough (very little really) citrus sweetness to balance it out. Nice, but gets boring fast -- seltzery beer.

Cask conditioned at Mahar’s. Very hoppy bitter, more hops than many IPA’s actually. Very smooth feel to it, with a sharp bitter bite for an aftertaste, enjoyable.
