Caramel and malts abound in the aroma, but beyond that, it’s relatively mild. The taste is very sweet at the start. This is definately a quality beer in my mind and tongue. It seems to have a more diverse array of flavors than McEwans Scotch Ale but it could use a bit more in the hops department. Deep red body, medium light tan head. A liquid garnet. Caramely aroma with berries and hints of cola, with notes of cherry and yeasty earthiness as well. Hits with bitter, dense toasty notes, opening up into caramels and sweet, candied berries and cherries. The alcohol kicks in and enhances delicate balance between bitter and sweet. Complex yet subtle; this beer isn’t about slamming one’s palate with ridiculous overhopping or sickly sweet, unfermented malts. If this was a blind tasting, I’d be just as likely to peg this as a Belgian Strong Ale than as a Scotch Ale. This is the perfect Christmas beer, and the perfect beer for winter in general, if you live in a place where snow drapes itself across the landscape and chestnuts were once roasted over the open fire, before the blight hit. Aroma has cherries, scotch, caramel and butterscotch. Quite powerful in terms of the alcohol in the taste and the aroma. The palate was a bit watery. This is good stuff I must say. The aroma is malty with notes of caramel, marshmallows, sweet cherries, toasted bread with a sugar glaze that has been just so slightly burnt at the edges. The aroma is not big and boisterous, but it is solid and interesting, just like a good Scotch ale should be.
This beer is fairly dry, it still has a malty sweet edge to it, just not quite as much as I was expecting. There is a full range of malty flavors here; from the deep caramel notes, to the lightly toasted perhaps even hint of roasted malt notes in the finish. There is a hint of butterscotch here, but just barely and it seems to magnify the overall maltiness of this beer. As the beer warms up a bit the mouth feel/ palate of this beer begins to pick up and it starts to coat the mouth after each sip. It also begins to pick up a candied cherry note, almost a bit reminiscent of cough syrup, in the finish, though it is not enough to be detracting. There is a bit of a tannic bite here as well, almost woody and there is a suggestion of smoke (though I might just be imagining this) and a definite salty note as well. This beer is quite simply about the malt, there is a bit of balancing bitterness in the finish, and maybe a hint of hop flavor, but really it is all about melanoids and carmalized malt notes; quite tasty. raymow (738), Bensalem, Pennsylvania, USA

Taste is a bit medicinal with some dried fruit. Theres an earthy taste thats like fresh soil. Just some chocolate flavor that I’d like to tste more of. Denent stuff.
