Nicely balanced flavor of malt sweetness with some coffee and bitter chocolate with a bit of an alcohol burn (bottle says 9%). Very enjoyable brew. ABUSEDGOAT (1934), California, USA

Good lacing on the glass as well. Aroma is MALTY. At first it was just malt malt malt. Wasn’t really enjoying this beer until it started to warm. Then the alcohol complexity came out. Toffee, caramel, smoke, sweet sticky finish. Some hops, faint hint of dark fruits. Started out at about 3/5, ended near 4/5 range. Good stuff. 5000 (2600), Hardened Liver, Washington, USA

Warm, nutty, caramel aroma. Spicy sweet with notes of licorice and coffee. Creamy, full, smooth palate. Not bad. TAR (2095), Boulder Co., Colorado, USA
| 4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | Aug 20, 2005 Chocolate mahogany. Healthy dirty-ivory cream. Alluring cedar, aniseed, and toffee glazed fruitcake aromas. Suppressed fruity esters, and hints of bubblegum. Very herbal. Creamy carbonic richness blankets the tongue. Deeply bitter bark-tinged backbone of malt and a dab of ashen malt astringency immediately engulf the woody dryness. Prevalent grainy-dry texture and roasted hazelnuts reinforce the firmness. Superbly attenuated, but densely moist and full, also. Artful utilization of buttery diacetyl and a tender caramelized banana accentuation lend the right amount of beefiness to the otherwise Ringwood-derived dried leather and woody briskness. The decadence peaks as it warms, and the body’s girth increases exponentially, casting clingy notes of rich fruitcake all over the palate. Scarcely a trace of alcohol, and what little is there, is clean as a whistle. Chalkiness lifts the much of the richness from the palate, before finishing with a suggestive note of fruitcake intertwined with a clinching roasted barley snap. A remarkable rendition, this is. scraff (1955), Baltimore, Maryland, USA
| 4.1 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 5/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 17/20 | Aug 9, 2005 22 oz bottle - Deep burgundy and brown, lightly tanned creamy head. Complex nose of plum, caramel, smoke, and cinnamon toast, with lighter shots of chocolate coming through upon warming. I wish the aroma had a bit more oomph, but the flavor is where this beer shines. Lots of rich and malty qualities that included smoked caramel, chocolate, and cherry notes throughout. Light booze tones and a hint of bittering hops come in late to round this brew out very nicely. Medium to full bodied, moderate carbonation, malty, bittersweet finish. Great stuff and bit underrated in my opinion...

Terrific retention. The aroma is made up of a medley... pear, mesquite, cinnamon, spearmint, light smoke, light wood and a touch of cola. Well-bittered and a little chocolatey. Lightly sweet, lightly tangy... maybe some citrus. These ancillary flavors are layered nicely upon a strong malt backbone. Medium-bodied and oily with lively carbonation. Finishes medium-bitter, chocolatey and grassy. World class effort! Prostman (1077), Pennsylvania, USA
