ogglethorp (784), Ohio, USA Aug 8, 2008 Bottle. Pours dark brown with a decent sized tan colored head. Aroma is peat, caramel, malt. Flavor is peaty, caramel, alcohol, rye, light chocolate. Palate is medium bodied, medium carbonation, finished on the dry side, and slightly smokey. Decent. CamdenD (570), Madrid, Spain Aug 6, 2008 Nicely malted strong ale. This one held its alcohol too well. Too well as in a high gravily beer, in my opinion, should show its roots and not rely too heavily on one aspect, here sweet malty bombs blowing up all over. Consider this a malt version of a heavyhanded DIPA. cbeers21 (376), Miami, Florida, USA Jul 4, 2008 Deep mohogany color, decent head, but quickly dissipating. Peaty caramel sweetness to smell along with a minty almost menthol-y aroma. Rounded and balanced body with a smokey earthy quality matched by a lightening vanilla/honey flvaor and a slight piney hop echo. Not bad. JaPe (69), Toronto, Ontario, Canada Jun 26, 2008 Perfect dark colour. Weak head. Vanilla woody malt flavourfollowed by a moment of slight bitterness. Then a sweet adtertaste. SpudClampDawg (919), Jasper, Indiana, USA Jun 14, 2008 22oz bottle: Deep caramel colored pour with a thin head that doesn’t stand up. Caramelized sugars are the forefront aroma in the nose, followed by a list of malty goodness. Baker’s chocolate, bourbony raisins, nuts, toasted breads, sweet cookie, peatiness, and on. The nose really mirrors the body, which is just as malty and complex. There is a subtle bitterness that keeps the beer under wraps. Nice cocoa and sweet chocolate finish.
