Commercial Description:
Typically Yorkshire. A strong Ale in which all English grown hop varieties are used. The grassy earthy character of Kent Goldings hops is the keynote in the aroma and finish. Try with fish and chips or a meat pie.

Fruity-hoppy, slightly earthy taste; sweetly fruity finish. Had it on cask at the Old Toad in Rochester.

Cask at Clark’s in Syracuse. Dark chesnut brown, no head. diacetyl and wet oily hops dominate the grainy cerealic nose. Nutty, cherryish and mostly bland. Dull small body, lightest carbonation.

Cask at Barcade. The end of the cask with associated yeast. Muddy dark brown beer. Aroma of soft earthy chocolate, caramelly maltiness and a very yeasty flavour. The finish shows a lovely UK earthy/spicy hop flavour. Earthy and fairly persistent bitterness. Even in this condition, it’s not bad, and if I’d arrived a bit earlier it would have been even better. Some fairly assertive cherry/berry esters. Lingering cocoa.

Light red copper ale with a small white head. Butterscotch aroma with a hint of corn. Roasted nuts in mouth with harsh bitter finish. Oily mouthfeel and lightly grainy.

Had the honour of being served it by Old Marcus Rubinstein, the owner and Brewmaster himself, at the Middle Ages brewery.

(Cask) Sample at Clark’s Ale House in Syracuse, NY. Pours headless with a deep copper body. Oily texture with a buttery nose. The flavour is mildly buttery atop a caramel maltedness. It finishes with a mildly sharp floral hoppiness. Above average.

On tap--pours a coppery-orange hazy color with nice off-white head. Caramel nose with some mild malt in there. Hoppy middle. Finish is caramel malt. Some bitter and hoppiness in the finish. Very average.

(cask @ The Old Toad - Rochester, NY) Coppery color with a thin tan head. Aroma is a small amount of hops mixed with a big nose of malts and lots of butter. The taste was very malty and buttery. Almost too buttery. Some slight hops at the end, but not that much. Aftertaste had some floral notes to it.
