Pours a mostly clear gold with a moderate linen white head that lasted until mid-glass and left a layer of foam with each sip. Pleasant aroma of malt and some grassy hops with a hint of sweetness. That hint of sweetness in the aroma is nowhere to be seen in the flavor, which is grainy malt and some astringent hops towards the finish. Dry at he finish as well. A decent beer with no problems. Received in a recent trade with Isreal, thanks bud! Syracuse Pale Ale is mildly hazy dirty copper with a peach hue. A pillowy two finger ivory head formed on the pour, eventually falling to a solid cap and leaving patchy lacing here and there. A good looking beer to be sure.
Biscuity malts with a drizzling of caramel form a solid malt foundation. The hops come through with a combination of bitter and sweetened orange peel that’s been sitting around awhile. If this was all that was present everything would be good. The problem here is the yeast. I always find Middle Ages yeast to leave a buttery aroma and taste to all their beers and I’m not very fond of it. It’s not as bad in some as in others but this is one of the others. It does mellow with some warming though.
Luckily the butter is kept to a minimum in the flavor. The malts become a bit more caramel-like then the nose suggested. Orange flashes through here and there lightly sweet but faint at the same time. Slight butter on the finish that doesn’t seem to get in the way as much as in the nose.
The carbonation is on the low end of the spectrum which lets this beer work through on its own. Medium bodied with a nice silky smoothness.
Even with the buttery yeast character I could drink a few of these at a time. The beer looked good but the smell threw me off at first.
I wasn’t too fond of this beer when I stuck my nose in the glass but it got better from there. Not one of my favorites but I could drink a few of these at a time.
